In the Charlotte Nc area. I have age 65 and older SSRI medicaire and medigap through united health care. Seems the docs don't accept it here have already tried some. And can't be benzo phobe as on them low dose for ove 41 years. And years ago was put into withdrawal by a young pdoc that thought could just quickly take off them. BP skyrocketed to 180/ forget what but a neurologist took it and immediately said you need a benzo doc let me write a script that will give you time to find one. So far nothing. Thanks Phillipa

Does it have to be a pdoc? Since rarely are they doing therapy any more (and that's not your focus right this minute) and they are scarce all overt the country, wouldn't there be a higher chance of success finding a GP, internist, etc to take care of your meds? There are just more of them.
Did you say your regular doc will or will not prescribe your benzo?
Also, your pharmacy will have a detailed listing of all your scripts - mine goes back 5 years. I can print it out myself on their website and/or ask them for it. This will give you a good record to show any type of doc how long you have been taking any med, at what doses, who prescribed, etc., if you are concerned they won't believe you.
I do empathize. I use Tricare which I have being retired military and they have been steadily reducing the percentage of reimbursements over the past 5-10 years. Understandably, doctors are more and reluctant to accept this. When I moved to where I live now I had to work pretty hard to find a doc who would take it. Not as bad a medicaire where you are, apparently, but I do relate.
Since you have been driving hours to see your retiring pdoc for so long, would you be willing to do the same for any type of doc? It stinks, but it may come to that.
I'll see if I can think of any other suggestions.

Your Medicare supplement plan should be able to give you a list of doctors. Also, Medicare.gov has a list of doctors by specialty. If you aren't getting what you need out of your supplement, you might want to think about changing it.
I live in one of the most populous areas of California - seriously - and am Medicare+Medicaid ("dual eligible"). There is only ONE clinic that accepts dual-eligibles in the entire county, so I feel your pain.
Luckily, my doctor turned out to be awesome. You can also call 211 or 1-800-MEDICARE.
Good luck!

...where you search for a doc by speciality, who accepts the medicaire approved amount on all claims? I searched for Charlotte and this is just the first page....
It would be tedious, but you may have to call and call. And are they booked up or refusing *more* medicaire patients? Do any have waiting lists?
FWIW, for the short term, I still figure a doc that is NOT a pdoc will be easier to find.
Your county health department may be of some help, too.

Hi Phillipa...... whats your relationship like with your regular physician? ANy chance he or she could take over prescribing your psych meds..... if you've been on a stable dose for a long time, I think you've proved that you're responsible with them etc, so that might be atleast a short term solution for you.

Seriously the biggest joke here said with sarcasm is the GP or internist as they see you and refer you out to a specialist. About a year ago since never get physicals I asked for routine bloodwork and said I didn't need it. Today Greg with the help of a pdoc I saw here and should have stayed with in retrospect before all the cuts gave names of two docs he recommended that take medcaire. Haven't looked them up on internet yet but have an appointment for middle Oct. Thanks guys. And if medicaire you can refer yourself to any specialist you desire. Ironic isn't it? And most specialists take medicaire. Just not the pdocs? Phillipa

I'm kind of appalled by how money hungry shrinks are. On the one hand, they claim certain people "need" their services so badly that they must have them--even at tax payer expense, if need be.
But then they turn around and exclude many people from high-priced, sometimes cash only, practices.

Reading stuff like this makes me glad that Australia has a national health scheme, one which all doctors participate in.
Most shrinks charge a bit more than the rebate you get from the health service, but not ruinously so.... my shrink in adelaide charged $110 for a 45 minute consult, and I got $80 of thst back.
