I was wonderering if the question from 2006 yes 2006 reagrding the safety of drinking protein powder while on an MAOI was ever resolved?I cannot use soy even if I was not on a MAOI ( upsets my stomach) so I was going to use an egg white protein powder. Ineed the extra protein for another condition that I have. I am on 20 mg of Parnate and have been for years Nothing else works
I would appreciate some guidance.

I don't know why you didn't find your answer in the archives, because this has been discussed numerous times, and to my knowledge, always leading to the same concensus opinion. Commonly available protein powders are assumed to be safe.
The pressor amine responsible for the so-called cheese effect is tyramine, which is produced by the decarboxylation of the amino acid tyrosine. This occurs commonly in protein foods that have been fermented, or have begun to spoil. Fresh eggs are safe with an MAOI, so I can't imagine that a dried extract of whole eggs could be a risk to you.
That said, the pressor effect is dose-dependent, so if you remain concerned about it, simply use an increasing exposure to determine your individual sensitivity to the protein concentrate. That's probably good advice for anyone introducing a new and substantial protein source while on an MAOI, as individual sensitivity to pressor amines varies by a couple orders of magnitude (i.e. by 100-fold or more).
Regards,
Lar

I take parnate and don't use protein powder, but researched the food interactions pretty thoroughly and never saw anything to suggest dried egg white powder would be a problem. After all, eggs are fine. The powder isn't fermented or aged, so no reason for tyramine content to be high.
One thing I will say about the MAOI diet. I had cheated quite a lot with cheese on salads -- feta, gorgonzola, etc -- with no bad results. I recently read through the section on MAOIs on the FDA website and it said just because you've cheated and had no effect doesn't mean you can continue cheating and have no effect. The tyramine content can vary significantly from serving to serving. So I've gotten more vigilant about everything. The other day I was in a restaurant with my husband and he said, take a sip of this draft beer -- it's really tasty. I wouldn't even take a sip.
I had also read somewhere that a couple of tablespoons of soy sauce was okay. But the FDA website said no -- tyramine content can vary so that even a tiny amount is too much. I've told my friends who love Japanese restaurants -- no more.

Thanks I bought it but have not tried it yet. I am making changes in my diet especially my breakfast Since it seems when I take my morning dose of Parnate( 15 mg) my heart races and my blood pressure falls. So far I have been having less of the heart racing if I eat less carbs and sugar in the am and more protein or at least try to balance the two. Any thoughts?
