In reply to MAOI's and egg white protein powder, posted by Gayle May on August 7, 2011, at 15:58:04
I take parnate and don't use protein powder, but researched the food interactions pretty thoroughly and never saw anything to suggest dried egg white powder would be a problem. After all, eggs are fine. The powder isn't fermented or aged, so no reason for tyramine content to be high.
One thing I will say about the MAOI diet. I had cheated quite a lot with cheese on salads -- feta, gorgonzola, etc -- with no bad results. I recently read through the section on MAOIs on the FDA website and it said just because you've cheated and had no effect doesn't mean you can continue cheating and have no effect. The tyramine content can vary significantly from serving to serving. So I've gotten more vigilant about everything. The other day I was in a restaurant with my husband and he said, take a sip of this draft beer -- it's really tasty. I wouldn't even take a sip.
I had also read somewhere that a couple of tablespoons of soy sauce was okay. But the FDA website said no -- tyramine content can vary so that even a tiny amount is too much. I've told my friends who love Japanese restaurants -- no more.
