Anyone NOT had success with Nardil?

Posted by jms600 on May 26, 2011, at 11:55:57

After trying most anxiolytics, antidepressants, and some antipsychotics with little success for my depression, severe GAD and panic disorder I'm now going to try to convince my doctor to try my on Nardil. How successful is it? Has anyone tried it and not had a good response??

Quite a few do but do know three off hand that didn't all previous poster actually four. All but one I know of is now responding to an SSRI, one broke back hypotension, one vomited in sleep, one went on to try other offlabel meds, and one is now working and doing well on prozac. But give it a shot see how it works for you as many have benefited on nardil. Phillipa

jms, good luck. Maybe this will get at the roots of your anxiety. It could really work. I imagine it doesn't work for everyone. Nothing does. Nardil has an excellent reputation. I haven't tried it myself. The sides might take some managing, but it's worth trying imo given the anxiety you report.

The second time I was on it, my response was aborted at 90mg after only a short period of time (1-2 months) of symptom free days, but I don't know whether it was the drug, my metabolism, psychosocial factors (my Mom was just diagnosed with terminal cancer) or something else that caused it to stop working that time.

The third time I expected it to work as quickly as it did the first time (1-2 weeks) and in frustration gave up on it too early (maybe 3 weeks).

From my armchair and reading a lot of people's anecdotal evidence, give a 90mg dose up to 7-8 weeks before you decide it's not working. Nardil was responsible for the best years I've had since my first depressive episode. :-)

I tried Nardil for about one year. It produced a moderate response, at least enough to be encouraged. Finally had to give it up though. Had a couple of pretty significant reactions (while obeying the diet) and was also experiencing bladder lock-up. That is unpleasant enough on its own. But the hypertensive crises really convinced me. I hope it works well for you. It is definitely worth trying if you are contemplating the MAOIs.

Hi, I am on 90mg Nardil and it's been the best med yet, by a long way. However, my mood and depression and OCD still cycle (I am not Xpolar) from "pretty good" and wired (like now) to "I very much want to be dead" (last week).
Hence it comes down to what you define as "success" really I suppose.

The Medical research Council Depression trial in england in the 1960's found that Nardil helped a significantly smaller number of patients than Tofranil where the depression was endrogenous/major - where Nardil realy comes into its own is atypical or neurotic depression that hasnt responded to Effexor or SSRI's
