I have come to the conclusion that there really are no good sleep aids out there.
Nothing that just restores natural sleep without f'ing you up.

Link, have you tried melatonin? I take 5mg. and ran out a couple months ago. I noticed my sleep quality going way down, so I bought some last week, and I can say without a doubt it has improved significantly.

Look I know it's not a drug that will restore 'natural' sleep, but if you are desperate, have you tried Promazine? I find it very effective in helping me sleep even if it does have a hang over effect. Not sure if it's available in the US but it's worth considering if you're desperate. Agomelatine may be another option which may provide a more natural sleep.

In what ways is trimipramine deficient as a sleep-aid?

>It is interesting that trimipramine should affect you that way. It didn't sedate me at all nor produce a hangover.
FB's idea regarding Xyrem is worth considerating.
I've never tried Rozerem, but if you glean any benefit from melatonin, it might be worth exploring.
I had thought that trimipramine might be a good choice for you since you seem to experience an antidepressant response to TCA to some degree.
Oh, well.

Which TCA have you tried, and what were the results?

I'm embarrassed to admit: just one and a half.
Doxepin (one)
Flexeril (one half)Flexeril was the worst. At 4mg I woke up and asked if my face was alright.
Doxepin knocked me out at 10mg but felt
very similar to flexeril (though not frightened. Just very drugged and like someone had given me a epidural: my feet felt far away. Then I tried 2-3mg of doxepin and spent the night stupid and awake.
How could another tca not affect me so
strongly? I don't know. And since doxepin was what was given me when I asked for ami, I am so hesitant to push, esp when the doctors just tighten their mouths in a particular way.I would like to hear Link's thoughts on xyrem.

Generally, prescription sleeping pills give me insomnia and anxiety. Other meds might be sedating but definitely leave me trashed the next day.
I started taking L-Tryptophan about a month ago (pharmaceutical grade). While I have been trying it for depression, one amazing benefit has been sleep. It isn't exactly a "sleeping pill", but rather it seems to have restored my natural sleep cycle and I sleep "deeper" than I have in many years.
I've read reviews that people say it leaves them feeling muddy the next day, but that hasn't been my experience. I take 500mg at dinner time.
This is the end of the thread.
