My dr wants me to take Provigil for depression. What kind of side effects should I expect? Is it good for lifting depression? Don't know what to expect and I'm kind of afraid to go forward.

Yes, I have anxiety, pretty serious sometimes. That's one of my concerns.

Modfanil is NOT a anti depressant.Is is however a decent augment.Meaning if u already have a medication it can be good for a kick start to aid in lifitng mood.
For this its good for,so are miniscure doses of most add meds like vyanese and dex.
If its to aid a exsisting med,i say go for it.If its to be a primary anti depressant,i question ur doc,but who am i anyway right lol.
Mofanil is odd in thats its a stimulant but not like the others,its likly you wont need anxiety help from it,see how it goes and if u do ask for a low dose ativan maybe.
I take it all the time for a augment,and have no side effects whatsoever.

My pdoc talked about a study with Nuvigil for bipolar depression that was quite positive. My insurance would only accept Provigil. I've tried every a d imaginable without success so I guess he's trying this out of desperation. So u don't think it will be good as a stand alone a d?

I hate to be a bubble buster i promise,i love success,but its just not robust,i mean by all means go for it.
You know im gonna say this cause its the only med i swear by,but has he condisdered parnate.

Is parnate ok for a bipolar? Do side effects include severe insomnia? If so does that go away? I'll suggest it to him my next visit.

Mood elevationModafinil used in a randomized double-blind study showed that normal healthy volunteers between the ages of 30-44 showed general improvement in alertness as well as mood. In the three-day study, counterbalanced, randomized, crossover, inpatient trial of modafinil 400 mg was administered as well as a placebo to the control group. ===============================================================================When I took it with Nardil 90mg, it really affected my eyes and vision. My eyes would sting and ache and my vision was very blurred - I had to increase the fonts on all my PC's, use eye-drops and so on. I also had days when I would be hyper-motivated, working 'til 3am, having loads of good ideas, working efficiently (instead of my usual OCD-infested thoughts). Whilst this was an amazing experience, I did feel out of control, like a car rolling downhill when someone's left the handbrake off. Ultimately after a month or so, Provigil stopped having any positive effects ( I was falling asleep at work again ) and so I stopped taking it.
Overall I'd highly recommend it, it is very "clean" and doesn't have that chemical-feeling that other stims do.

It sounds like it's ok as an add on to an anti depressant. I'm going to give it a try as nothing else has worked for me. In terms of parnate I think my doctor would think it has too old school. He's never mentioned a Tca or Maoi. I'll mention it though.

I am not a doctor but I've seen many different doctors over many years. If your doctor does indeed refuse to try MAOI and TCA's without supplying a valid reason, I would find a new doctor, preferably a psychiatrist rather than a GP. In fact, I'd say it's almost essential s/he be a psychiatrist.
