I have just started on Wellbutrin plus Buspar, but I have become uncertain about this combo.
Here's what Roger Gould writes about Wellbutrin plus Buspar on medhelp.org:
Both of these medications directly affect the same brain receptors, so it is very likely that there would be a cumulative effect that may be toxic rather than the supplemental effect you are hoping for. These medications are used to supplement ssri's because they target different receptors. They are not recommended to be used together.
I have no doc to advise me, so I'm a little worried.
I would like to hear from anyone who has an opinion about this combination of drugs.
Best regards,
Peter Heuer

The are both somewhat proconvulsive, perhaps that was the thought?
It doesn't sound like a typical combination or one with special synergy, but i could imagine cases where this might be the best choice for someone's particular needs.

Thanks, d/r!
I appreciate your answer very much.
I'm on 150 mg of Wellbutrin, 60 mg of Buspar and 45 mg of Remeron.
I have social and economic problems, but I have never been on a better cocktail.
So I will stick with these drugs!
Best regards,
Peter Heuer

I don' know who Roger Gould is, but I take issue with his over generalized claims. The buspar molecule and the wellbutrin molecule are totally different. We have not a clue what their actual mechanisms are. We have identified "some" of the receptors they have affinity for, but that really doesn't tell us much. There are so many unknowns.
The fine print on either of these meds says something like this, "while the mechanisms are not known, it is thought it works by..."
The only way to find out if a combination is helpful, hurtful, or neutral, is to try it. Mankind does not at this time of history have the wisdom or knowledge to make the claims of Mr Gould. IMO. This combination might be a miracle for one person and a toxic disaster for another. In either case, we would not know why or how. We could only make hypothetical guesses on limited knowledge and discuss our theories at online forums.
There is no substitute for personal trial.

I had no idea that buspar was developed for an antipsychotic? Does it work like one with weight gain and all the other stuff that antipsychotics cause in some cases? Phillipa

I've never heard of buspar being contraindicated with wellbutrin. It seems like the mild calming action might be useful with wellbutrin, but--I'm not a doctor, so don't listen to me.

Thanks for your reply!
Roger Gould is a MD, so he should know what he is talking about.
However, I have googled Wellbutrin + Buspar.
There is no evidence for interactions between these two drugs anywhere on the Internet. There is no substitute for personal trial.
Well, I have been on Wellbutrin and Buspar for some time now.
I feel okay.

Now I have come to the conclusion myself that Roger Gould is wrong about Wellbutrin plus Buspar.
