Euphoria from naltrexone ???

Posted by TriedEveryMedication on March 24, 2011, at 22:28:42

convinced my doc to let me try Naltrexone for internet addiction. (he said, eh, probably won't do anything, but why not?)

So, I've been taking it about a week. 50mg in the morning.

I had a glass of beer with dinner last night. WHAM - massive euphoria.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I've been pretty "up" all week.

Should I worry?
Thanks

I could use a little euphoria.

If it does not continue, which I don't think it will, I would not worry. Then again, what's wrong with a little mild euphoria on a regular basis?

I also could use some. I'd be careful though as can become addicting. Lucky you to have a doc who prescribes naltrexone. Phillipa

naltrexone is addictive? I looked around and I cannot find any evidence of that. Are you thinking of another drug?

naltrexone is an opiate blocker

How has your sleep been?

50mg is a fair bit?

And they use naltrexone to block alcohol induced euphoria.

Perhaps at that dose it had worn off and was acting like LDN?

That would be lovely if it did. At that amount I thought it could induce depression in some? Do I have that right?

spoke too soon...

now that I've been on it a couple of weeks... had a beer with dinner last night and felt nothing.

I mean nothing. I usually get a slight buzz out of one beer.

And I'm also starting to feel a bit glum. not feeling like doing anything.

I'm taking effexor and sometimes desipramine concurrently

Naltrexone blocks the effects of alcohol. That's why it is used to help alcoholics abstain.

LDN has been known to improve mood.. I had euphoria for a few hours about two weeks into LDN. But 50mg is way too much. So what happened with you doesn't make sense to me.

In any case, I think the whole experiment provides good clues that you should be give LDN a whirl. 50mg is just too much.

I have not heard of naltrexone being euphoric, but it's conceivable that it is not truly a pure opiate antagonist, but a very weak partial agonist. You would expect there to be a very low ceiling on the intoxicating effects, meaning that taking more won't increase it past a certain point.

You also have other drugs in your system which may be interacting. It could be some weak and idiosyncratic interaction between the mix of drugs in your system at that moment.

Mountain Dew, I really love how you rethink the obvious and come up with a new answer. I mean I'm complimenting your creative thinking and find it beneficial.

Thanks. The obvious has always been my best subject. :)

:D

I used to say the obvious eludes me.... workin' on it.
fb

I remember liking lexapro for awhile. I was very dumb at my treatment onset and would start and stop stuff by myself.

I also liked effexor quite a bit. Wellbutrin was great, pooped, then didn't work after about eight year down the line.

Very best to you and transitioning your meds.

Thanks. Making changes on your own can be helpful as long as you do it in an intelligent way. I'm taking three meds, and I am now confident that taking a little more or a little less of anything won't make things better. To get to this point took a lot of experimentation, and if I had to wait a month between every little change, it would have taken a maddeningly long time.

The Zoloft experiment only lasted a day, btw. It was just like I remembered it.
