Viibryd Acquired by Forester; Not Available Soon

Posted by MissThang on February 23, 2011, at 9:05:06

Just wanted to update you all on the latest information I've received on the newly-approved SSRI Viibryd. Yesterday it was announced that it's been acquired by Forester Labs. I just called their customer service line and they told me that instead of being available in the 2nd quarter of this year as was originally announced, it will now likely be mid-summer or fall before it's available.

Really bummed -- was hoping to get some help with this overwhelming anxiety that Parnate left me with (along with help for the depression I originally was trying to help) and hoped to to it without weight gain or sexual side effects. I'm on serzone's generic right now, but after 4 weeks, it's doing nothing for me:-(

I don't think that is accurate. It says on the website that it will be available this spring. Clinical Data already contracted out the drug out to Taiwanese pharmaceutical company to manufacture the drug. My guess is that it will be available around spring, but there won't be a big commercial/marketing push until mid year.

No, Bearfan, I'm afraid my original post is accurate. Just look up all the press releases from yesterday. Forester just announced they bought clinical data and I talked to two different departments at Forrester today and both said sometime in the fall. I'm sorry...I'm really having a hard time right now and was holding out a lot of hope for that drug...

There use to be a product specialist from Clinical Data, the company that developed the drug. Did you call them? Just because a company bought the majority of the shares doesn't mean the original company stops operating. While Forest may start marketing it mid-year, it doesn't mean that CLDA won't have it available earlier. I already talked to CLDA and said titration packs were in stock for limited markets. Please don't give up hope just yet. If it does take longer than its just a few more months to wait.

I know it's only a few more months, but I'm going down the rabbit hole fast and can't keep this up much longer...my dr's talking ect or hospitalization...I have a fairly high profile position and while I have been able to scrape by working only part time this past year, if I went either of those two routes and people found out about it, it would end my career fast. My flagging career is about the only thing I'm clinging onto at this point, so that would be the final blow I fear.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm throwing a pity party -- just really disappointed that yet another drug has failed me...I seem to need a balanced combo of serotonin, noripinephrine and dopamine to actually feel good, but I can't seem to find a way to get that balance (parnate was a disaster for me and I have no desire to put up with the weight gain and sexual dysfunction that comes with Nardil -- one of my fondest wishes in life is to get married someday, and being fat and sexless is a pretty sure way to ensure that will never happen, so I may as well die if I have to deal with those side effects.

Anyway -- if you find out something more positive about Viibryd's release, that would be very good news and might actually give me some hope. I was thinking that taking that with wellbutrin would probably be the perfect combo for me, but I just don't know if I can wait until fall to get relief.

I found a video of a psychiatrist talking about it. Apparently Viibryd works on Serotonin and Dopamine. Honestly it's probably not all that different from and SSRI except that it has less tendancy to make one anxious, fat and sexless.

Yah, Bearfan, that's exactly why I was so hopeful about it -- the promise of some help with depression, added to reduced anxiety and little chance of sexual side effects or weight gain -- sounded like the perfect ssri to me and that, combined with wellbutrin, should be a great combo for me. I just don't know what to do in the meantime since I've just started tapering off serzone.

It would be great if you could contact the person you know of at clinical data and see if there's a shot that there might actually be some titration packs out there somewhere...at this point, I'd travel just about anywhere to give it a try (if I could get up the gumption to drive several hours...guess I'd figure out a way if I had to.)

Anyway, would love to hear some more positive news about its release.

I just called Clinical Data's health division, PGX, and they said as far as they know, the release schedule has not changed (Q2 Spring in other words as early as late March). While it's still possible that there will be a delay, it's probably won't be significant. I am guessing it will be manufactured by CLDA's manufacturing plant in Tawian until Forest eventually takes on the means of production in which it will be 'Forest' Branded. Also it's important to note that other recently approved FDA drugs usually don't take that long to roll out. I remember Pristiq was released about 3-4 weeks after approval. A 6 month delay after approval really is somewhat unprecedented since their is no follow up studies due the FDA giving the green light to market and manufacture Viibryd back in January. We'll keep or fingers crossed. I know that nearly 50% of my depression comes from the adverse side effects so if it really helps there it would be great news.

I sure hope you're right, Bearfan, since that was one of the few possibilities that was giving me some hope.

It still seems more likely to me that they'd wait to launch it until Forrester started production of the med, but I really hope I'm wrong about that.

If you hear anything else more concrete, please post!!!

Viibryd comes with a titration pack. I really don't think you guys should be all that hyped out yet about this drug though. It's really going to be just like a SSRI (maybe better or not as strong) with less side effects. I hope it's an advance, but its too early to tell.

According to this press release I just read, Viibryd will not be available until the 2nd half of the year, as I originally posted:

Miss Thang when you click from your link onto the med itself it says second quarter of year again? So confusing and so are the non side effects. Phillipa

Viibryd's mechanism is basically an SSRI + Buspar

Posted by mtdewcmu on March 7, 2011, at 18:05:53

In reply to Re: Viibryd Acquired by Forester; Not Available Soon, posted by MissThang on February 23, 2011, at 17:24:01

The mechanism of Viibryd is supposed to be serotonin reuptake inhibition and 5-ht1a partial agonism. That is the same effect you would get from mixing any SSRI with Buspar (a 5-ht1a partial agonist). So, I don't think Viibryd will do anything revolutionary.

I wouldn't take a single press release to a be all and end all. It might be marketed aggressively by that point, but it may be available in pharmacies months before then as well. It could take months for Viibryd to saturate the drug stores, in that case, you may be able to get your hands on it as early as a few months before then, meaning possibly April, which would technically still be in Q2.

I got a prescription filled via special order at a major pharmacy chain. So I can confirm its out. Just took the first dose, it's a bit sedating, so this may be the reason for the required titration, but I'll try to stick it out.

Any weird feeling with first dose or pretty smooth? Do you take it in the morning or the evening? The interesting thing I read is it hits some of the same receptors as Abilify, giving you a quick response.

I noticed the prescribing info stresses that you MUST TAKE WITH FOOD or Viibryd won't work properly, intersesting.

Please give us an update. How is working for you? How is it different than a typical SSRI. Any side effects, sexual or otherwise? Is it activating or sedating?

During my last visit with my pdoc he said I could be his ginuea pig for that drug, I decided to go w/ Nardil instead.
