I posted here a while back asking about coming off Darvocet since it has been removed from the market. Well I saw my doctor a week ago and he put me on Tramadol 50mgm 1-3 times a day. I have been on it for a week. I started tapering the Darvocet when I started the Tamadol. The first week began taking half a tab of Darvocet rather than one every other day while still taking a whole Darvocet on the other days. Then I began skipping a day and taking nothing. Actually I went two days taking no Darvocet at the end of last week By Saturday (three days ago) I began having REALLY bad racing thoughts, anxiety and total inability to concentrate. All this time I was taking one or two Tramadol a day (50 mgm tabs) I have take Wellbutrin SR 200 twice a day and have for five or six years. -- it is the only antidepressant that really has ever helped me.
My Doctor did caution me, sort of in passing, that I might have some mild anxiety problems adding the Tramadol with the Wellbutrin SR Well, I forgot that and thought the symptoms I was having were being caused by the lowered Darvocet dose. So for the past two days I have gone back to the whole Darvocet. I also take 0.5mgm of Ativan twice a day and that has helped marginally with the anxiety. Then this AM it hit me like a rock -- Could it be the Tramadol and not the withdrawal from the Darvocet.?!? I have done some reading this morning and I think it may be the tramadol!! So now, I took one 50mg of tramadol this AM and about two hours ago I took half a Darvocet. (This was BEFORE it dawned on me that the Tramadol could be the culprit)
I really need some help/advice here. I just want off BOTH -- I would rather live with the pain.
Any input out there?? Can I just stop the Tramadol after a week of 50 -100mgm a day??
I may be posting this in the wrong place, someone straighten me out if I am, but I need help. I cannot reach my doctor until late this afternoon and I am not sure what he can do anyway!!!
By the way the Tramadol did zilch for the pain!!!! I just want off all of this stuff and stick with my Wellbutrin and Ativan!!!

You know it really angers me that the FDA's fear of pain med abuse has caused so many pain meds to be withdrawn. Some say demerol will be next. Don't they realize not everyone abuses pain meds? They are talking that patches will replace meds by mouth. I'm sorry I forget what your pain is from? Never knew tramadol caused anxiety. Wellbutrin yes. Could it be the combo of the wellbutrin and tramadol? Phillipa

Yes, the doc did warn me that the two together "could" cause some anxiety problems. I just was not ready for something so sudden and severe! I literally barely knew my own name and could not put two coherent thoughts together! Today I am a different person (actually I'm the "me I know!) I haven't taken any tramadol since this AM --and won't either!!
We will have to think of something else for the pain. I am sixty-eight and have a severe spinal scoliosis and some stenosis. I do not have osteoporosis or any bone loss, my bone scans are normal --it is strictly arthritic and neuro from the stenosis. I was 5'7" ten years ago and am now 5'4" from the spinal curving.
You are right about the pain meds. Darvocet was perfect for me. I had developed some idiosyncratic PVC's but have been cleared by a cardiologist. He really didn't feel the Darvocet was causing the PVC's. I talked to the doctor who prescribed the Tramadol later this afternoon and will see him later in the week.
Thanks for your reply. I always feel better coming to this site -- kind of like family!

Almost 65 here same arthritis issues and curvature of spine but add osteoporosis. I have been with granddaughter 18 months and appalled can't pick her up as the pain in back intolerable. Currently take nothing for pain. Now Motrin and tylenol cause heart problems and strokes also what's left for us? Must be something. Or do the boomers just die? Phillipa

Yep I am right with you on the grandchildren thing. It breaks my heart. I have four grand sons under three and a half and I have never been able to lift them or hold them except sitting down. But I am not going to just die -- there must be something out there for us!!!

I thought about looking into Fentanyl Patches - but I am SOOO afraid of the stronger opoids. Vicodin is what I used following surgeries (knees and feet), but I do not see that as a long term answer.

I did read patches are the future of pain meds thinking they are meaning lidocaine though not strong at all.
This is the end of the thread.
