Posted by clubfitter on February 2, 2011, at 17:45:22

Lost about 90 lbs. recently and need to up meds again. Looking for the most weight neutral options. Currently taking Lamotrigine 200mg, sweating ALOT. Any ideas? Input greatly appreciated. Thank you.

what are you current problems? I think you can go up to 400 on the lamictal, if you can tolerate it. Trileptal is usually weight neutral and I don't think you have to do labs (although I've heard that some people's docs have their sodium levels tested to make sure they're not too low).

Geodon and Abilify don't cause the massive weight gain associated with other atypicals, but your mileage may vary, and if you can avoid an antipsychotic your probably should.

Have you tried or considered Welbutrin?

Trileptal good for depression augmentation? Haven't heard much about it. Lamotrigine side effects are very discouraging and effect my outlook significantly. You know how it is.

Mainly addressing what has been called refractory depression. Some have suggested bipolar. I don't agree. I had some good luck with a Lamictal/Lexapro/Geodon combo years back, but got over prescribed the Geodon and ended up in hospital. The lamotrigine is causing me to sweat excessively. I guess most anti convulsants are anti manic? with the exception of lamictal? I am definitely not manic...at least not that I can recall....for years. Just the catastrophic, debilitating, lost everything in my life depression....was very close to doing ECT, but doctor's gave me another round of meds...

i have considered welbutrin, but again the whole sweating thing. i can handle pretty much all side effects except sweating and weight gain.

Wellbutrin would be a good idea. sometimes it can make you sweaty though. SSRIs can mess with temperature regulation too. the most weight neutral one is probably zoloft and thats notorious for night sweats.
lexapro is one of the worst for appetite and weight gain.
topamax is used for excessive sweating but it can make you pretty dopey. Its good with supressing appetite and the emotional addiction to food.
It may give you a boost.
tegretol will induce metabolism and youll need more lamictal if you take that. dont think that will make the side effects worse though.

I've found Welbutrin to be exactly what I'd been looking for in a weight neutral antidepressant. As my thyroid function is completely controlled by medications (post-op Graves Disease) I don't find excessive sweating to be a problem--of course, your mileage may vary. Best of luck to you!

It's been a while since I took wellbutrin but I still remember the edginess I would experience if I took it late or (god forbid) went out forgetting it. I did find it weight neutral but I also found lexapro to be weight neutral. SO you are going to have to see for yourself. Be sure your doctor knows your deal-breakers are weight gain and night sweats so you don't get the "let's see how this goes" line.
For night sweats stay away from effexor.

Seriously no weight gain on lexapro at what dose as sticking to 2.5mg with 50mg luvox. Don't want weight gain. Thanks Phillipa

Lexapro was long ago and I don't remember the dose but I clearly remember no weight gain.
However, others have said otherwise.

Hi, Just wanted to say that I have gained weight on all SSRIs I've taken (lexapro and zoloft). I actually lost weight on Effexor, and it worked well, but it made me sweat A LOT. I was very hopeful about Wellbutrin, but I turned out to be allergic to it. Very bummed about that, because even though it made me edgy, I could tell within a few days that it was helping me focus and retain information better.
