How I buy my meds for $1 a day

Posted by Hombre on January 19, 2011, at 20:26:30

I don't have any health insurance at the moment, although that should change in a month or so. I'm in a country where everyone gets great coverage for a low monthly payment based on income. With insurance, the cost of a visit to the doctor could be as low as $5, and that would include medication.

I haven't found a new pdoc here, and I'm not sure how much meds will be once I have insurance, but in the past I ordered 3 months worth of effexor, ambien, and lorazapam (not my current Rx) and it was actually free. Yes, free. Something about getting several months worth at a time. Go figure.

So what I have been doing is ordering from two Canadian pharmacies, Cheapodrugs.com and Pharmstore.com. Both have decent service. But for some reason Cheapo drugs decided to almost double their price on Effexor XR 150mg generic, from $19 a month to $33, so instead I am ordering my 3-month supply solely from Pharmstore.com. They have free shipping, and a relative will forward them on to me to where I am currently living. The total bill for Effexor XR 150mg, Seroquel 100mg, and Remeron 30mg, a 3-month supply of each: $120.

I just scan/take a picture of my Rx and upload it or email it in once I place my order. In the past, handling and shipping to Asia took about 2 weeks. I hear it may be slower to N America, but I hope to get everything shipped and forwarded on in a month...or else I'm screwed! No, I'll just go find a local pdoc and pay out of pocket for a week or two to tide me over. But for just a little over $1 a day I take a pretty heady cocktail that includes some otherwise expensive meds, and that ain't too bad.

Thanks for the info. Hombre. I'm going to check those pharmacies out. Unless I find a better value, I will be ordering my next bottle of Lexapro from MagicPharma, where I believe the cost of 30 5mg tablets(Scored for splitting! the ones in the U.S. are not!) is 36 dollars. My first prescription after my crappy prescription coverage was 95 bucks!

I forgot to mention that there are a few generics(escitalopram) for Lexapro available for much much less than the very very cheap brand cost I mentioned.

Hey Hombre and Morgan!

Have you checked out www.healthwarehouse.com? I just ordered Ambien from them and had it in 2 days! Free shipping also. You can also choose your generic supplier (it is an up cost of $15/med) but it seems their prices are quite good. 30 Ambien for $8

haven't done it, but generic lamotrigine for $7.50 (30, 200mg tabs)

alazopram was $6.25 for 30

hombre...where are you now?!?

Hi Kate,

I'm am still in Asia, but in a different country. I'm still looking for work, but am confident I'll find something soon. Once I can make money and actually spend it wisely, I will feel like I have completed my recovery, and can focus on maintenance while building up a new healthy, happy life.

I haven't tried to find a pdoc here just yet, but my old doctor gave me another 3-month prescription before I left. She also wrote a letter explaining my diagnosis and prescriptions.

Depending on the cost, I hope I can just get my meds locally. It's still a bit of a pain having them forwarded overseas, but at least I have someone to do that for me.

In terms of my bipolar depression, if that is what it is, I just take my meds and try to eat well and exercise daily. Neglecting those two can completely override any amount of meds, leading to fatigue and depression. Of course my meds are doing something, as I can bounce back from a bad day as easily as anyone else can, I think. In the meantime, I just need to relaxxxx and stop taking things so seriously. This is where the psychological aspects of long-term mental illness need to be identified, understood, and slowly changed.

Best of luck.
