Seroquel vs. Ambien?

Posted by gritslad on January 19, 2011, at 18:28:35

I thought I posted this question, but maybe not.
What are your experiences with the efficacy of Ambien vs. Seroquel for insomnia. Was taking ambien which worked well but have been given Seroquel. It doesn't seem to work as fast, but I guess it puts me in deep REM sleep because I have very vivid dreams--so much so that I was sure I was awake. Last night, however, I know I was sleeping fitfully.

Personally ambien was fine. But seroquel could not handle. 50mg left me unable to speak although the words were in my mind just wouldn't come out and dizzy. That was my experience. I feel a lot of people do very well on both meds. Phillipa

Seroquel seemed to knock me out better than Ambien does, but I was always worried I would develop tardive dyskenesia, so I've been going with Ambien and it finally seems to be working. I guess there's always a risk I'll develop a tolerance to it, but I used to use 1mg of xanax to help me sleep (which worked for years) until I recently developed rebound anxiety after going off parnate and needed more xanax solely for anxiety.

I was also concerned that Seroquel may interfere with the effectiveness of my AD since it is some sort of dopamine inhibitor (I believe), but I'm sure for some, it helps. Does it seem to help your mood at all the next day or worsen it?

Personally, I prefer Ambien or Restoril to seroquel. Seroquel gave me terrible nightmares and made me surly the next day. Plus, its much cheaper to take a generic pill designed specifically for sleep than it is to take Seroquel, no matter how low the dose may be.

I used both of them , bot were good , but Seroquel was better without a doubt. Both knocked me out quickly but when I tried Ambien I woke up very fast
However you know about all these risk everybody know about AP , many people dont suggest to take AP to treat problems like inmsomina or other thing for healt issues

Seroquel did give me the vivid dreams. I'm ditching everything this new psychiatrist has prescribed and going back to my orginal prescription, which she said I could do. Prozac, lamictal, adderall as needed; Ambien as needed. I'm hopeful that after I get through this job craziness (next week), I can exercise and sleep well, so i can ditch the adderall and maybe the Ambien.

Ambien seems to have the potential to lose its efficacy over time, at least in my experience. Same with zopiclone. Seroquel at 100mg still knocks me out cold and puts an upper limit on hypomanic type anxiety/irritability/racing thoughts. But in the end, if you can get the results you want from Ambien, do it! Who knows what's best for your situation and biochemistry.

The restorative sleep happens in Delta not REM sleep. REM sleep is associative with a highly active brain with corresponding paralysis of skeletal muscles so as to not act out any of your dreams. An overload of REM sleep is never good.

I always cringe when p docs shell out antipsychotics for sleep. It is a horrible habit.
