Anyone know which types of light boxes are best?

Posted by psychobot5000 on December 29, 2010, at 23:02:25

hi all,

Anyone know what the latest thinking is on what color light is best for SAD/Depression, or can anyone point me to a good resource? There's a great deal of contradictory information out there on what color light is best for light therapy, and many articles seem to be as much as ten years old. It's hard to tell if the latest thinking favors white light, blue, green, etc, or whether it doesn't matter, or whether one or more of those is more dangerous (some say blue light is best, while some say it causes most strain). I'd be grateful for whatever information anyone has, or whatever research you can point me to--or to any actual specific light boxes, since my goal is to find a good one, and the research is just a step to get there.
Thanks,
Psychbot

I would be interested in this info too, as I also found lots of old, contradictory information. I eventually bought a blue light mainly because that's what my brother has. When I look at it I feel the same way I do when I look into a deep blue summer sky - calm and content. So I think my blue light does help but that's just my experience.

I am going to go for a philips blu lite.
I dont know why, probably after reading all the reviews on amazon it seems the best even if a little pricy.

The Philips Blu light and the Uplift Technologies - Daylight Sky both seem like good products. However, they work on different principles (the blu light uses blue LEDs, while the Daylight uses 4000 kelvin light, assuming that intensity alone will work. Not sure which is actually better.

I've used a 10K lux, full spectrum lamp from Full Spectrum Solutions for a few years. I chose the floor lamp and have it bedside. It's a bit bright for a reading lamp at night, but it does have a dimmer switch, and it definitely helps my mood, sleep-wake cycle, and energy. I've also used an Apollo Go-lite, which is the blue light technology. I'm not as conscious of a definite benefit from it, but it's useful for travel.
