We always have Christmas at my mom's house and my brother brings the meal. Last year he smoked a turkey. I am vegetarian so didn't have any of the turkey, just veg which I am more than happy to eat.
So when I asked was he planning to smoke a turkey this year, he said that we weren't going to have a turkey. We were going to have raclette. Reclette! You have GOT to be kidding me. It's hard for me to explain what raclette is so here is a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raclette Basically, raclette is a cheese.
I love, love, love, raclette, but being on the Parnate it is not something that I can eat. Although I have been able to eat small amounts of strong cheddar without any reaction, so I figured that if I had a little raclette I would be fine. I decided to be proactive and I took a 100 mg of Thorazine before supper.
I thought I was in the clear because I was fine for a few hours. It's now 11:30 pm and I am getting that tell-tale sign of a hypertensive crisis ... the headache at the base of my head. I have taken another 100 mg of Thorazine which should stop everything in its tracks.
I am so stupid for eating food that I KNOW I shouldn't eat. On the other hand, it was the first meal I have had in several weeks. I have been living off of yoghurt and baby carrots.
I am glad this day is almost over.

Well that was just what you expected from your brother, I guess, in termes of considerateness?

Yikes, I'm sorry there wasn't more consideration for your needs. Hope you're feeling better.

The final dosage of thorazine stopped the headache so that's good.
I didn't have to eat the meal, but that would have created a whole other set of problems.
I am mad at brother, but I don't blame him entirely because I chose to eat the meal. Next time I won't be so stupid.

Was your brother aware of the MAOI dietary restrictions? Most people are not. When I go to friend's for dinner, I have to tell then not to add cheese to a salad until I served myself a portion without cheese. It's kind of a wierd diet when you think about it. Most doctors and nurses don't even know about it because MAOIs are so rarely used these days.

Just to add to what I already wrote. I went to the ER a couple of weeks ago to get my blood pressure checked after eating parmesan cheese and having a horrible headache. I told the triage nurse I just needed my BP checked because I took and MAOI and she didn't know what I was talking about. Then a lightbulb went off for her and she said -- oh, are those the drugs where you can't eat cheese? It was funny.

Yes, he knew. I think he thinks that it's just a crazy diet. I have told him what the outcome could be and he said "that's ridiculous". I try not to argue with him because he always pushes me down in a painfully emotional way.

Yes, when people do know they always thing of the cheese. They don't realise that there is a whole host of food we can't eat or drink. Did they treat your headache? Was your pressure high?

Then your brother is a jerk. How upsetting. To not take this seriously. My pressure was a little high, probably because I was panicky. Not so high to be a hypertensive crisis -- 146/84 I think. As soon as they took my BP, I got up to leave. But we have to make a chart for you!! No, I just wanted my BP taken. Since then, my friend lent me a BP cuff, but for a few days I was obsessing about my BP -- too high, I might have a stroke, etc. That's the problem with BP cuffs. My PB was all over the place. From 97/60 to 154/95. Averaging about 125/70. A little on the high side, but nothing to worry about.
This is the end of the thread.
