Nervous about asking for controlled rx...

Posted by zonked on December 21, 2010, at 12:51:00

Hi all,

I've been ok. Depression has been present but managable... Dr dc'd dexedrine several months ago, due to where I was living at the time, and it was the magic bullet that, along with my other meds, killed the depression. Now I have my own place in a safe neighborhood and really do need it back--why am I afraid to ask for it back?

Parnate 90mg
Lamictal 200mg
Ativan 1-2 mg prn

I don't know why do you feel you are afraid to ask for the med back? Any abuse? Just asking. Phillipa

Because dexedrine kills most people's depression instantly, yet tollerance ususally develops quickly. Most doctors will treat you like drug addict if you ask for a controlled substance for depression.

Hi Zonked

What was the reason your doctor prescribed it on a temporary basis only-i mean what would htat have to do with your housing situation? is the doctor you want to ask the same one who originally prescribed it to you?

I don't think you can take it with Parnate though i've seen people here try that. I wouldn't do it because i think it's too risky and maybe overkill.

Dex is a very effective antidepressant, imo, and should be rx'd more often. It's cheaper than alot of those new ones..I've asked a couple doctors for it and didn't have problems. I took a small dose, which greatly helped, because it never caused side effects for me unlike the nasty SSRIs they used to give me all the time.

Maybe you are scared because you said you are feeling ok (manageable)..and in that case, the doctor would wonder why you were asking? Anyway, congrats on getting your own place!

His concern is that my situation only recently stabilized, and is also concerned about hypomania. He has not dismissed the idea altogether and if he sees progress (no depressive crap leading to hospitalization) it will probably be rrescribed in a month.

As dysthymic, apathetic, and ADD as I am, I may "see" an internet doctor and order it online. The difference 10mg dexedrine makes in my life is astounding.

If you start talking like that to your doctor, he will be even more suspicious.

Only exceedingly rarely does dexedrine continue to produce "astounding" effects in the long term.

I know. I am at a loss though... feeling 60% of normal (blah, unengaged, but able to still function) is not me... I wish my brain would just accept what works and not gradually adapt so I'm back in the office needing adjustment...

If it were me and dexedrine made that much of a difference to me, I wouldn't hesitate to "see" an internet dr. and get the script.

As others have said, it is likely you'll build a tolerance to it quickly, but being someone who is struggling with MDD right now, I'd take just about anything (legal) that would give me a great couple of weeks or months just to have the joy of feeling good for a while. And who knows -- you may be one of the lucky few for whom it works for an extended time.

I think, with your ADD dx combined with your depression, that you're an ideal candidate for dex. I might emphasize the ADD aspect when I talked to the dr. though...just saying that it makes you feel "great" may lead a wary dr. to believe you're an abuser, and you certainly don't want that. (You know how judgemental drs. can be.)

I guess I'm lucky cause my pdoc will prescribe most anything I want if we think it will actually help my depression. Of course, I'm in the midst of an MDD bout right now, so we're obviously not succeeding much at this point, but nevertheless, after reading about so many people's drs. who won't give them maoi's or stimulents or benzo's unless they're at the point of suicide or hospitalized is ridiculous to me -- good luck and let us know what you do!

The month I was on 10mg dexedrine, I didn't notice tolerance or the anxiety or physical weird effects I get on Adderall (cold hands, nasty feeling when it wears off.)

There are strategies for dealing with tolerance--"drug holidays", supplementing with (I believe) magnesium...

The legality of seeing an Internet doctor and ordering online appears to be OK in the US. I'll be even more sure before I do this; due to holidays and moving I'll have to wait until I get paid. It's a shame, because my Medicare part D plans covers Dexedrine in full and I hate having to pay cash; but being in dysthymia-mode is really irritating. It's hard to think of other things besides "how can I fix this?"

Mine doesn't have a problem with it. I take Adderall as part of my cocktail and it helps calm down my thoughts.

Of course it depends on the doctor.
