Wellbutrin for depression in PTSD

Posted by creepy on October 20, 2010, at 11:48:54

Has anyone here taken wellbutrin for depression while having a diagnosis of PTSD?
I tried this medication a couple times and it pooped out after awhile. Anxiety at higher doses also.
Basically I need something for support while I do EMDR and SSRIs are not an option.

Yup had the increased anxiety on wellbutrin also so bad ended in hospital and that was with benzos. I don't know if SSRI's out. What about St John's Wort. My nephew says it works great for anxiety. Phillipa

You might want to try clomipramine with Wellbutrin, as clomipramine is a tricyclic but with mostly serotonin reuptake properties. I'd also suggest a mood stabalizer or a benzo with that.

Best wishes,
Jay

clomipramine and mood stabilizers arent something Id consider at this point. Maybe SJW. or SAM-e.
The potential side effects like weight gain impact my physical health which just makes everything harder. Already gained 50lbs on SSRIs.

what are your symptoms?

Hey. SSRIs pretty much suck...sorry you've gained so much weight. What symptoms are you trying to minimize with meds? Are you apathetic, lethargic, unable to concentrate? Or is it more of an agitated depression? You can go here: http://www.mhc.com/Algorithms/Depression/frames.htm

and play with the depression treatment algorithm. Its designed for professionals, but it could give you something to talk over with your prescriber.

Well, no, I haven't; however a close relative has and found it gave immediate and considerable short term relief of depression. He did not have ptsd, but I'd consider him inclined to anxious episodes. It kinda smoothed him out and gave him a boost.

The beauty of Wellbutrin is the easy starting and stopping. You can try it without the commitment required of many other meds. This might be overly simplistic--but I think it's worth discussing with your doc. (You don't mention bipolarity or irritability as issues.)

Good luck.

Thats part of the reason I want to re-trial it. I get a lot of energy and motivation from dexedrine, but I cant take that at the doses needed to maintain the effect.. its for ADD only.
I did well on bupropion in the past. Beyond a certain point there was a lot of anxiety. I may have to take something with it, maybe clonidine or a similar drug. NE is helpful with some symptoms I have, like low blood pressure, but too much makes me edgy.
I meet with my doc again in a couple weeks. I have a feeling she wont go for it. She thinks the PTSD symptoms are more important than the depression, but for me the depression is far more debilitating.
