exercise making me really depressed

Posted by rovers95 on June 7, 2010, at 10:51:42

Hey, was just wondering if anyone finds exercise has a depressant effect on them rather than the much hyped antidepresssant effects.

Exercise appears to be making me more depressed immediately and for the 2 to 3 days following and i was just wondering if anyone could suppose any mechanisms by which this is happening?

thanks

Rover

weird/sad, for days? bodies are weird. what the hell is the "endorphin increase" that every health article promises? when will people realize that not everyone is the same?

if I force myself to exercise & am more miserable doing it than I would be doing nothing, it seems to make me more depressed.

my sister said that when she was pregnant she didn't get the good feeling after exercise. before that, she didn't know how I could feel no improvement.

I am just curious is it depressing while you are exercising or do you just feel depressed after the fact?

I wonder if it could be problems with a certain gym? (Too many fabulously fit people....) or are you just doing the wrong exercise.

I certainly believe your experiences, I am just trying to see if there is something you can change as exercise is a great relief for me.

Exercise as an isolated activity is kind of weird, actually. Much more interesting to take a bike ride to a cafe, to walk in the woods, to do martial arts, gardening or yoga. That said, it does become a chore (a necessary but difficult chore) when depressed. If you can only walk around the block a few times, that's a great accomplishment on the bad days. When I am particularly tired I just do joint rotations like this guy:

It's great for relieving tension in the body and does not take as much effort, but the results can be quite refreshing. Don't be fooled by the simplicity.

I wish we could edit posts. I just wanted to say don't be fooled by the simplicity, this guy served as a bodyguard for the Beijing Wushu team when Jet Li was a member. None of the those guys could fight, so they brought in this guy in his 50s to take challenges.

Exercise generally helps my depression. I wouldn't say that I noticed results over night however. Exercise seems to have a mood stabilizing effect for me too. Sometimes when I exercise, my brain exposes me to things in my life that I'd rather keep supressed. However, as the exercise progresses, I become more likely to take the initiative to address such issues.

I agree with above posts, in that most people's idea of an exercise regiment is sitting infront of a computer screen all day and then jumping on a treadmill for a few hours. Exercise works better (I think) when it is interspersed into the daily routein. 4 short jogs for 15 min works better for me than one hour long one.

Yes it can. I posted about this a while back. I try not to do too many heavy weights now and limit my running to 2 or 3 times a week.
