What dosage of Marplan do people find to be most effective?
I usually need 90mg of Nardil to benefit from it.
Thanks.

The maximum dosage of Marplan recommended by the manufacturer is 60mg.Has anyone taken more than 60mg per day?

Last year I remember asking my pdoc why Marplan didn't seem to be used these days, but unfortunately I don't remember what he said. From time to time I have pondered trying an MAOI, but am fearful I might not survive the washout before taking it. In any case it would be even less likely for me to survive a post MAOI washout, during which time I would also be suffering from the inevitable withdrawal. That just might be the last straw.
Anyway, the reason I mention it is to ask, in your opinion, if there are any tricyclics that behave somewhat like an MAOI with respect to having triple monoamine action. Does Imipramine do anything like that?

Found this ominous statement on Wikipedia for Marplan:
"Although medicinally helpful to people in need, Isocarboxazid has many side effects, including: headaches, jaundice, chest pain, rapid swelling and weight gain, fainting, dizziness and tremors."
Maybe it has worse side effects than other similar meds, or maybe that is just an overstatement. The jaundice and 'rapid swelling' sound unpleasant. I'm not even sure what is meant by the latter.

So Scott if you do try Marplan see if you can get your P-doc to agree to go higher than 60 mg if necessary.
Good luck!

I'm not getting many responses to my questions regarding Marplan. I guess the use of Marplan to treat depression is uncommon. I hope it is being prescribed often enough such that the drug company can justify its continued manufacture.

Scott,
I'm a bit concerned that if you do find relief on isocarboxazid, it will then be discontinued by the manufacturer. I find it difficult to believe that enough people still take it to make things viable for the supplier.
Sorry for not being too positive!

I am still taking lithium 300mg. It helps a little, but I keep it because of its theoretical potential to reduce cell death and encourage nerve growth.
The only time I ever responded well to treatment was with a combination of Parnate and desipramine. Since 1990, I am no longer responsive to it. However, MAOI + TCA still helps more than the other treatments I have tried. I will return to MAOI if Savella doesn't work out. I guess it makes sense for me to try Marplan first since I never gave it a fair trial.

Scott I just posted some info on Valdoxan. Has some novel mechanisms of action. If you can afford it that also might be worth looking into.

I sent an e-mail to Validus Pharmaceuticals asking them if they plan to continue marketing Marplan. I have no expectations that I will receive a reply, but here is one of their e-mail addresses.

Oh yeah... forgot about the Savella.I'm sure you have covered this before, but what is your depression like? Is it mainly a pure unipolar melancholy, or is it characterized by other problems?

Hi Bob.
> I'm sure you have covered this before, but what is your depression like? Is it mainly a pure unipolar melancholy, or is it characterized by other problems?
My bipolar depression does not present as melancholia. The prominent symptoms are anergia and anhedonia. There is a lack of mental and physical energy. I also suffer from cognitive impairments, including slowed thinking, inability to concentrate, impaired ability to read, and poor memory. There is also some social anxiety.

My condition is somewhat similar to yours except I have debilitating generalized anxiety as well as obsessional problems. Oh, and anger/irritability too!

Apparently it is in the process of becoming a medication to aid in the fight against Parkinsons and other dementia-related disorders. I've no references for that (tho I haven't looked for any yet). But if true then Marplan will be sticking around for a good while yet!
This is the end of the thread.
