I have been taking Vyvanse for a couple of months now. The insomnia is gone - thank goodness.
But I have some questions. I notice when I am in a social situation, at first I get hot and break out in a sweat (which is really embarrassing). My whole face gets sweaty. After about 10 - 20 minutes I stop sweating and seem ok. Is this anxiety? Is the Vyvanse causing it? Is there anyway around it? Would taking Klonopin before social situations stop this? It's embarrassing to be dripping sweat - people are probably wondering what the heck is wrong with me.
I tried Pristiq, but it didn't really help with anxiety.
Another issue - sex drive. My sex drive is just not there with Vyvanse. Is this because the stimulant closes off blood flow to the important areas? Anything I can do?

>Yes that particular medicine could be causing your anxiety but being from the amphetemine family, if anything it should increase your sex drive.
You might try a half a dose or smaller of Lexapro to help with the anxiety, don't really know what might increase sex drive.

I know EXACTLY what you mean exept I drip sweat when I'm having a "panic" attack, I was at work and ... just it happened and I was getting these button up shirts out and sweat tripped on them.
Yes, Klonopin will eliminate the anxiety, and stop the sweating. Xanax does the same, I used to take 3mg when I was taking Dexedrine and it worked like synargy.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has experienced this. The awful panic and anxiety are bad enough - it just comes out of nowhere when I am around people. Then the sweating is so embarrassing.
I will up my Klonopin to see if I can combat the anxiety.

The sweating doesn't have to be related to anxiety (although it might be).
Many, perhaps most, drugs heat you.
Opiates and amphetamines in particular do.
Alcohol does. I think Neurontin does too. And benzos, though less so. Nardil is said to. Dunno about the others.I wonder if it is some inflammatory response to the drug?
Some Chinese herbs (like baical skullcap) are said to be cold, and perhaps they can lessen inflammation, in that case by lessening allergies.

Certain drugs, particularly alcohol, dilate superficial blood vessels in the skin, thus creating a feeling of warmth. In some cases, core body temperature actually decreases due to heat loss from the skin.

It's elevated temparture due to fear, or anxiety from being in a social relm. Just adjusted the klonopin, Xanax decreases sweating...I took dexedrine and it caused me to sweat like it was flushing everything out on the skin, took xanax and it just normaled things out...

I've been taking Vyvanse for about 3 weeks now. I could tell an immediate difference in the way I think and act. My mind is not racing all day long. I have energy and am motivated to get things done so I can lay down and sleep and night. I can stay asleep as opposed to before when I had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. I get so comfortable in my bed that I do have trouble wanting to wake up but no problems once I climb out of bed. I have been smoking more and plan to quit in the near future. The doctor said he will help me after he sees how I react to Vyvanse. I went through years of being misdiagnosed with anxiety, depression, and bipolar. My brother has been diagnosed ADD/ADHD since 6yrs old and I thought that you had to be dumb and extremely hyper like him. Hence, I never made the conncection that I could even be ADD because I feel I'm an inteligent and non-hyper person. I stumbled across my discovery by mistake when I was having an extreme "episode" and looked up my brother's medication to see what it is used to treat. Then I was directed to the symptoms and I had ALL of them. When I went to the doctor (whom had never seen me before, and is the only one my insurance covers near me), he didn't believe me and accused me of trying to get pills for illegal uses. I told him to look at my medical history and the medications prescribed and he would see that I've had a long history of problems and I believe I was misdiagnosed. First he informed me that only 3% of adults have ADD (boy is he way off) and the symtptoms don't appear overnight. He finally agreed to give me a 1 month prescription and I'm supposed to go back and report my progress. I feel confident and my mood has increased and I almost always feel happy. And when I do feel sad, it's a short-lived experience. My sex drive has increased dramatically and I believe it was due to psychological reasons which Vyvanse has helped me with. I feel normal for the first time in my life. It was like puting glasses on for the first time and seeing clearly. I only hope that the doctor will see that this has helped my situation dramatically and let me continue taking it.
My symptoms included:
*Struggle w/anger,frustration,irritable w/moodswings, depression, anxiety, tension
*Overreacting to critcism, low-self esteem
*History of problems that medication didn't help
such as depression, anxiety, and told I may be bipolar due to moodswings & irritability
*Trouble w/motivation, procrastination,organization
*Insomnia, constant leg shaking where people always asked me if I was nervous/anxious about something
*Low sex-drive,no energy
*Impulsiveness-(risky behavior), 7 car accidents which over 1/2 were my fault (this symptom was one that made me realize whoa..it was my a ha moment), roadrage
*Forgetful, clumsy, running into things, dropping things
*Hyperfocus(that was the 2nd a ha moment)
*Constant daydreaming and wandering all day and during conversations, problems remembering conversations, dates, and appointments
*Being withdrawn and drowning myself in quiet activities and wanting to be left alone.
*Genetics-my brother previously diagnosed
My Side Effects:
*Diarehha in the morning, in the evening it returns to normal-only when medicine kicks into my intestinal tract do I get the diarehha
*Headache
*Loss of appetite but returns at night when comming down from medicine and if I'm hungry I am able to eat, for instance if I didn't eat much the day before. I also sometimes forget to eat until the medicine wears off and I feel hungry b/c I'm not compulsively thinking about food like before
*The rest of the side-effects are positive and definetly outweigh the few minor ones

I have been searching for a cure for an unknown condition that I have for a long time. I am a college student and have been dealing with all the stresses that come with it. I have noticed that my condition, which started around the age of 17 (I'm now 20), has gotten worse. I have never talked to a doctor about this condition as it is too embarrassing and I am too good of friends with my doctor. (I don't want to tell my parents that I want to change doctors either). I could go to the doctors at my University, but they are extremely expensive and I doubt they would help. So basically I have spent the past 3-4 years trying to figure out what is wrong with me using solely the internet. When I came across this site, and particularly this thread, I decided I would post something, which I have never done before. My condition: Basically what I have narrowed my condition down to is this: (symptoms that I feel are the most apparent will have * next to them.)
-I have trouble focusing or staying on certain tasks
-*I sometimes lack confidence in social settings, and especially lack confidence when in social situations with lots of random people that I don't already know
-*I am a very social person, but lack any sort of sexual confidence when talking to girls. I can get any girl to like me (not trying to be cocky), I am good looking, funny, smart, but am scared and awkward in 1 on 1 situations with girls, which seem to be the most stressful situations.I included the above post because it has a lot of similar symptoms to mine, which I included here:
-*Struggle w/anger,frustration,irritable w/moodswings, anxiety, tension
-*Overreacting to critcism
-*Trouble w/motivation, procrastination,organization
-*Constant leg shaking where people always asked me if I was nervous/anxious about something, (and my mother always yells at me for)
-*Impulsiveness-(risky behavior),I do things in situations no matter what they might be, to get some laughs, but I am almost instantly embarrassed for doing them, and have a sort of panic attack
-Forgetful, clumsy, running into things, dropping things
-Hyperfocus
-*Constant daydreaming and wandering all day and during conversations, problems remembering conversations, dates, and appointments
-*I can NEVER listen to teachers in lectures because I am always daydreaming about random things, no matter how interested I may be in the material being taught. I constantly will be called on in class and have no idea what was being talked about because my mind is in LaLa land.
-Being withdrawn and drowning myself in quiet activities and wanting to be left alone.***
-Genetics- my twin brother was diagnosed with ADD and then ADHD which he received Adderall and Concerta for. This gets me to my main condition, which is the reason why I have decided to look for help. When I am in a social situation/ about to be in a social situation (i.e. college party, which is the main trigger I have found), I become very nauseous. I have experienced this nausea hours before an event, right before the event, or right in the middle of it. This nausea comes with of course with a complete loss of appetite. I'll find myself desperately looking for an escape from the situation that I am, all of a sudden afraid that I will throw-up any second. And if I DO find an escape from, let's say, a party, by saying something like "oh I'm so tired and I have class tomorrow," once I leave the party, I will INSTANTLY feel better, all signs of nausea and stress gone. I put three stars above, where it says that I am withdrawn and drain myself in quiet and solo activities, because when I am doing this, I feel the best. Sometimes I would by far rather sit in my room on my laptop doing work or watching a movie or listening to music instead of going out to some great party.
Before I go on, I want to note that I don't believe I have really ever experienced any sort of depression, in fact, I'm sure if you asked most of my friends, they would say I am very enjoyable to be around. I am a very nice and happy person, and almost always receive happiness and kindness in return for all those whom I interact with. I don't feel I have any self-esteem problems either. I have tons of friends, am in a Fraternity, and consider myself in the most popular group of people at my large university. Although I do love all of my good friends, sometimes I find myself wishing that I could just be alone and to myself, that way I wouldn't end up in "nauseous situations."
In situations when I get to a point of peak discomfort and anxiety, I do actually vomit, and have probably actually vomited after a "nausea attack" around 10 times in my life, usually in times when I just can't away from whatever it is that is making me feel uncomfortable.
The vomiting I DON'T believe is induced by ANYTHING besides this condition. It only has happened in situations when I am completely SOBER.
It has been one of my obsessions to constantly search the web for information on what I am experiencing on what has become I'd say a weekly basis. My internet surfing has taken me across hundreds of topics, and I have to say that this message thread is the first information that I have found to be slightly related to myself. (And I have no idea how I even reached this website or message thread)
So, now you may be wondering to yourself, why is this crazy kid posting his problems on a medicine thread having to do with Vyvanse and sex drive?
Well, it is because I have possibly found a cure in Vyvanse, although I am not even close to being certain. I have only tried Vyvanse 4 times. I am not prescribed, and I received it from a friend who is prescribed. 2 of the times I used the drug for studying purposes (which has become a very common thing to do for college students if you are unaware) and the other two I used Vyvanse before a party. I apologize to those who may be appalled at my illegal behavior, trust me, I'm disappointed in myself for doing it. But the 4 times I have tried Vyvanse, its like I experience a strong confidence in everything I do. I perform much better, and and both times I used Vyvanse just for normal activity, I wasn't even close to feeling nauseous uncomfortable, or anxious. I'll probably continue to see how I behave on Vyvanse in social settings, because it seems to help.
I'm not sure how this site works, and I don't know if anyone is going to respond to this, but I felt like I should post something because of the similarities I found in the post I am replying to. If you have any information or advice on what I should do or how to better use this site in my situation, please don't hesitate to help.

Welcome, Joseph Smith! You've provided a great deal of material & I wouldn't presume to try to sort out a diagnosis -- that's a doctor's job -- but I can tell you that over the course of my life I've had many of your same symptoms & that at age 59 I've finally figured out that one of my central problems is ADHD. Ritalin has made a big difference in my quality of life, so I understand where you're coming from.
First, if you are going to treat your ADHD you need to do it consistently, with medication every day, and you need to find the proper dose. That means finding a doctor or psych nurse practitioner you trust and who trusts you. Doesn't your university have a clinic that's open to students? If so, print out what you posted here & take it with you when you talk to the doctor. Also, there are inventories / questionnaires you can fill out that will help make your diagnosis specific.
Finally, it may be true that ADHD is at the center of your problems -- but it sounds like you have social anxiety as well (in my very amateur reading of your post), so in working with a psych doc or nurse or therapist, you might also want to think about medication that specifically targets that issue.
The main thing I want to suggest to you is that dealing with problems like this is an ongoing process & it won't be suddenly fixed with a prescription, even though you feel so much better with the drug. That's why I want to strongly encourage you to go to your campus health center or find a doctor you can work with to sort this out. And please stick around Psychobable -- there are a lot of smart people around here who have been through what you're dealing with.

Hi Sheila,
I think Adderall may have decreased my sex drive too, but it's hard to tell because I'm also on an antidepressant...I don't know if the decreased libido has anything to do with blood flow, at least not in my situation (it would be good to monitor your blood pressure though). In other words, arousal is not a problem for me. I just don't think about sex as much. Part of that could just be that I'm just so focused on doing other things....Somebody mentioned that sex drive increases with stimulants. That may be the case in the short term, but I don't think that a decreased sex drive is all that uncommon for people taking ADHD stims. In fact, it may be more of the norm.
As far as the sweats and the anxiety, I think I've experienced what you are describing regarding the anxious feelings. Social situations are probably just one kind of trigger for me. I'm not shy, but when I'm not feeling good, I sometimes do feel nervous around certain people because I'm so preoccupied with how I'm feeling.
Is there anxiety that goes along with the sweating, or is it just sweating? Or is it just the sweating that makes you feel nervous and/or self conscious? These kinds of situations will usually only happen to me when the Adderall is wearing off. My body just does not adjust well when the drug wears off. This is when I start to get anxious and maybe jittery, even hypersensitive. It's just an uneasy feeling. The more doses I take in the day (I take instant release - max 3 doses per day), the more likely I am to have an unpleasant ending.
I think klonopin would be fine, but only once in a while....I had a stressful period last summer and the adderall was magnifying my anxious feelings. I was prescribed ativan, but I started to rely on it too much. I pretty much took it every day for about 2 months...not good. I became dependent on it, and I am still paying for that today. I should have quit taking adderall and lived with the consequences instead of taking ativan every day. Please don't make the same mistake I did.

Interesting. Vyvanse seems to have enhanced my sex drive, if anything. I don't have the sweating side effect, but I have noticed that my face often seems more oily on the days that I take it, and if I don't get enough sleep when I'm on it, I sometimes get lesions in my mouth.

When you first start taking them, amphetamines can increase sex drive, but over the long term, the tendency is towards a decrease in sex drive. That's not to say that this happens to everybody. Some people may experience little to no effect in libido, or even an increase. For the most part though, I think that an increase in sex drive caused by amphetamines like Vyvanse is something that would most likely level off after a while.
Interesting about the oil...Amphetamines/ Vyvanse can have the effect of drying out your skin. For example, I've noticed my hands and face getting drier if I take Adderall for many days in a row. My forehead still gets a little oily though, but I don't know if it's any different from when I don't take Adderall.
Lesions in your mouth could be associated with dry mouth. Amphetamines tend to decrease saliva production. That can be bad for your teeth because low saliva content means that bacteria are more free to grow in your mouth/ on your teeth. In my opinion, lesions in your mouth are probably more related to this aspect than to how much sleep you get.

Joseph:
sounds like Ur suffering from classic social anxiety, although nausea is indeed a rare but established symptom of extreme anxiety and distress. What you suffer from is indeed a very common and in most cases treatable condition. Your response to vyvanse (dextroamphetamine) is not atypical, as amphetamines (esp the d-isomer) can often have a prosocial, confidence-boosting effect. My advice: see a psychiatrist and get a script for it if it truly helps you. But if your nausea/anxiety is limited to social situations like parties then perhaps a benzo as needed would work as well.
Good luck

Hint: you are taking VYVANSE, duh! ; ')This chemical is a very powerful prodrug to dextroamphetamine. It is what is causing your anxiety--directly! Trust me, I was on it for two years. While taking 6mg/dy Xanax at the same time. Yep, my pdoc was a total idiot croaker. I finally saw a good doc, who told me "of COURSE you're having panic attacks! You have PANIC DISORDER and you are taking AMPHETAMINES! That's like coming to me with insomnia and then 'just mentioning' that you drink 8-10 cups of coffee before bed!" You MUST get off the speed if you want the anxiety to go away!
He was soooo right! The Xanax started doing its job 3 days after quitting the Vyvanse and I was even able to halve my dosage of the Xanax! Vyvanse CAUSES you to have anxiety attacks more effectively than nearly anything besides for breathing pure CO2 and smoking methamphetamine. Vyvanse throws your body into an immediate "flight or flight" reaction that your body reserves for when you are being attacked. What a GREAT drug, huh? I've seen it work for children but almost EVERY adult ADHD person I've seen it scripted to has the precise effects that you are...including me, my fiancee, her Mom, and about 6 friends.
BTW, forget about your sex drive on Vyvanse also. It's not gonna come back until you stop taking that crap.
I don't understand--it's not that physically addictive and you can get off of Vyvanse in a few days of sleep. Perhaps you should try a VERY small dose of Adderall (like 10mg/day or 1 20mg XR) or, better yet, 30mg of methylphenidate (Ritalin) sustained release (like Concerta) if ADHD is a problem. Generally, extended-release Ritalin is a Godsend for adult ADHD--you can have sex again, no more sweating, and no more of that damn ANXIETY!!!
If you take amphetamines, please trust me on this: anxiety and panic and eventual psychosis will become your way of life. Why risk it? I went to college for psychopharmacology (but got bored with it after four years and stayed another two years to get my degree in Organic Chem). I worked for the company that makes Adderall (Shire). They know PRECISELY what it, Vyvanse, and Dextrostat do. Please be careful!
Whatever you do, I hope you believe me. Best of luck and peace!

Just so others don't think you're a medical doctor, would you mind putting something about that in your "signature"?
