Today my pdoc admitted some people are or seem to be opiod responders and tramadol was spoken about although it's not an opiod. Does anyone think it works for mild depression/anxiety? Thanks Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,
For me it worked a little against anxiety. Also made me a little drowsy. But no effect on depression. Side effect: constipation!
But maybe it works better for some.
Take care,

Keeping in mind that the rate-a-med forums are somewhat biased in who goes to those places to write about their med experiences, tramadol happens to be one the three highest rated meds for depression. The others are parnate and nardil. Tramadol literally blows the other ADs in the weeds. Longtime treatment resistant patients discovered it by accident when they started it as a post-op pain med.
Maybe its because I got a generic version and its old, but that stuff made me feel horrible. Gosh, that was a bad two days waiting for it to wear off. Thankfully my experience is uncommon. Most people seem to love tramadol for depression.
And if you have pain, which I think you do (?) you have every right to be talking to your doctor about taking it. Kill two birds with one stone. Doctors seem to hand it out like candy almost as bad as antipsychotics, so it shouldn't be hard to get.

Doctors seem to hand it out like candy almost as bad as antipsychotics, so it shouldn't be hard to get. When I had my surgery in last november, I was not able to tolerate the side-effects of the Dilaudid (Hydromorphone) or the Oxycontin (Oxycodone)opiate meds...
I finally ending at the emergency, in pain and panic, and they give to me Tramadol...I can tell you it's like a kind of Effexor-XR sensation. Not really helpfull for the pain and not helpfull for the anxiety also.
For the depression I don't know. I never have any improve for the depression from any meds... maybe i'm not depress but just anxious...
I know that I always had hard time with opiate meds. Demerol is making me sick and give a lot of visual hallucinations as well as others opiates...

Seriously thinking back to when I fell and broke arm and given some percocet I was smiling that night. I found they immediately lift depression and I feel normal. Unfortunately I don't think I can get a script not even the pain clinics will prescribe it here or in Greenville. Darn!!!! Has to be a way and yes back pain. Good memory BB. Love Phillipa

I was given Tramadol for pain and it totally worked great for my depression. My docs still consider it a pain med and won't give it out too easily.
I wish I could get a doc to give it to me. It worked great for my depression.

I think it absolutely works well for anxiety and depression. It is clearly serotonergic. In fact, I think one of the contraindications is that people on SSRI's should not take it due to the possibility of serotonin syndrome.
Not only does it work, but it works fast...This can be seen as a good thing, but it's also very bad because there's a strong possibility of psychological habituation and addiction.
Then there's the fact that it's an opioid, and that's a whole other can of worms. Personally, I think this should only be used as a matter of last resort or maybe just as a once in while "booster." However, this would only apply to people who are very responsible with drugs and are not prone to addiction.
