Shrink says I want sympathy

Posted by Guy on February 20, 2010, at 21:05:32

In desperation I went to a new shrink for a one-time med consult. After reading my file, which documents 14 years of extreme suffering (anxiety) and suicidal ideation, he suggested that I am not getting better because I want sympathy. He also suggested that the times I told doctors about my suicidal urges were actually subconscious attempts to draw attention to myself. This really pissed me off as I know the last thing I want is sympathy and attention. What I really want is for the pain to go away. He then proceeded to write me a script for 4 mg. of clonazepam, so I guess I can't complain too much. Still, I think I have just about had it with psychiatrists.

No, don't give up on them...one day you will stumble across the right one, who will stumble across the right meds. In the meantime, you (and me, and many of us on this site I am sure) need these docs to help us in our quest to make that pain go away. Some of them are obviously in the wrong profession, specifically the ones who tell people in pain that they just want sympathy. I'm glad you're pissed about that, you should be! But hang in there.

I have to drive a full day to see a pdoc who is 73 but is the only one I've found in this whole state that listens to you. Don't know what I'll do when she does retire. She was out almost a year from a near fatal car wreck and is 73. Her husband was also a pdoc and died many years ago. She lets me decide what I want to take and now says my diagnosis is Gad and I know she's write. Your pdoc sounds like the ones I've found other than her. Phillipa

Perhaps you are not getting better because he has no way of helping you?

It's unlikely that clonazepam will help you long term (just as opium would not, though at least you would feel better).

So it is in his interests to throw the onus back on you and suggest you have a subconscious need to draw attention to yourself.

He is in a better position.
He has people pay him for the time he spends with them.

I don't know about the "because", but it's natural to want sympathy. I'm glad you received some here.

Sounds like he is saying you are borderline. Stupid doctor! Find one who cares. You deserve it.

Your shrink is an idiot who should be struck off. But like you say he made out the prescription so I guess you have to humour him.
