And curses to extended patents.
The stuff is so expensive that my insurance company grudgingly supplies me a twenty day supply of Provigil at 1 1/2 per day, when 2 per day would be what I really need. And I wish they'd just charge me 1 1/2 times my copay and let me pick it up every thirty days with the rest of my prescriptions. It's unbelievably annoying.
Still, I'm very grateful to have what I have. My doctor had to push pretty hard to get even that ok'd by my insurance company.
Three years to generic provigil.

Dinah in all seriousness does it give you anxiety? I remember you posting a sleeping disorder where you fall asleep I think could be wrong. But I get tired so easily now. Anyway some say it's very stimulating, some that it doesn't worsen anxiety. What's your take. Thanks Phillipa

I don't think that it has any effect on anything but wakefulness. I don't feel wound up or anxious or even more energetic. Just awake. I'm very prone to anxiety and worried about that myself. It does seem to clear brain fog as well.
Mileage may vary of course.

You can get generic Provigil from Canadian pharmacies under the generic name modifinal. It's not as good in my experience but it is much, much cheaper. If you go this route, I would ask for the drug manufactured in a European country, or Australia. I have had bad luck with meds from Sri Lanka.

I've already tried a couple generics from other countries. They really sucked. One of them felt like a distant whimper compared to the real stuff, and the other one sent me into a tailspin depression, where the real stuff feels good and clean.
I hope whoever the generic companies are that will make the stuff do a better job than the other ones already making it. I'm not holding my breath on that one though.
You get what you pay for holds true, not always, but often enough.

I think I can probably make do with the one and a half until it goes generic. I only use one on weekends or when I am able to take a nap during the day, and store the others up for when I need two a day.
It just really annoys me that the company got an extension on the patent, when they made no change to the medication. I understand the need to regain R&D expenses, and I am too impressed with the medication to begrudge that. But isn't the initial period supposed to cover that?
It really is marvelous, Phillipa, and nothing at all like coffee. Coffee makes you jittery and tense as well as awake. With Provigil I just stay awake, and it helps me with those periods of brain sludge although it doesn't entirely stop them.
I'm the person who can't take certain antidepressants because I find them way too activating. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Provigil doesn't feel at all activating, though I suppose it must be on some level.

Please don't use this site to exchange information that could be used to obtain prescription medication without a prescription.
But please don't take this personally, either, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person, and I'm sorry if this hurts you.

One big irony here: When Provigil was first introduced, maker Cephalon was dismayed that the US (ridiculously) branded it a Class IV controlled substance (i.e., same class as benzos like Xanax or Klonopin). The US is apparently the only country that did so, based on one study that showed monkeys had a desire to keep taking it. (The reality is that getting off, say, Effexor is a helluva lot more difficult than quitting Provigil.)
Well, little did Cephalon know that the controlled-substance designation would later turn out to be a blessing to them and a curse to patients. Reason: Because Provigil is a controlled substance in the US, virtually no Canadian pharmacies will sell the hugely-cheaper Canadian equivalent, Alertec, to US customers. So in retrospect Cephalon is probably delighted they were slapped with the Class IV in the US, and were no doubt all-too-happy to accept the same restriction for their embarrassingly-named followup, Nuvigil.
BTW, I saw that in August CVS Caremark and Rite Aid filed suit against Cephalon and colluding generic makers for keeping generics unavailable to the public. They say that Provigil would have been generic in 20006 had the generic-makers not been paid off. Funny how the generic-makers' claimed altruistic mission to save consumers from price-gouging pharma companies withers when they get to improve the bottom line by making a cozy hands-off deal instead...
