Anyone Read The Horror Stories of Biophosphates?

Posted by Phillipa on October 18, 2009, at 12:19:52

I'm literally ill as found out from ortho who sent me for Dexa Scan that now osteoporosis needs a med as swiss cheese back but the tech who did the scan said she would not take a bio as quite a few of the scans she does are women whose dentist will not work on them as their jaws have literally crumpled from biophosphates. One neighbors friend is losing a kidney from taking them. I will get the results and needs to go in ready to fight for not taking them. According to all the sites I've visited and believe me searched most positive searches I could lawsuits keep coming up combined with vioxx. I found one that said the gold standard is the bioidentical hormones which I just weaned off. I weaned off due to weight gain and fear. I was thinking of combining the hormone bioidentical prescription with this new product from health food store. Have a website www.growbone.com. Please some help in this serious decision. I've never begged before but I am now. Please? Love Phillipa

I don't have an opinion on bioidentical hormones, but the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology certainly does:

It's your decision.

Seldom he does use a lot of FDA approved ones like Climara, Vivelle, Vivelle-Dot all FDA Approved and one dose fits all. Progesterone; prometrium pill or capsule l00 or 200mg. For testosterone when book was written in 2005 a patch by protor and gamble Intrinsa was in the works. He also uses pellets and intramuscular injections. The Creams were my choice because of price. I know there is now a spray available FDA approved for is it estrogen? I know my neighbor uses the spray, promethium all from her ob-gyn. Dr Ronald Brown Md former ob-gyn uses them all. His book Is "The Youth Effect" available on Amazon. Also website carolinahealthspan.com. Now a while ago the site was not working. I do have their e-mail. Will send it. Thanks again Seldom. I am trying to gather all info. My T Scores different Dexa machines different places: 2002 Spine -2,Hip -1.9: 2003 Spine -2.4, Hip -2.3, 2006 Spine -2.7, Hip -2.3. So waiting for results on this years. Now I'm 12 postmenapausal. Love Phillipa Oh he uses blood testing.

Fb this is a very important issue for all women. Your site is also very helpful. I do hope others respond with their experienced. Forteo costs almost $1000 a month I searched it. Canada a bit less. So What's the very bestest treatment in your and others opinions. Kind of confused by actonel saying for cortisone treatment neighbor across street takes that and no other meds, And then a woman 50 had breast cancer is taking boniva. My head is literally spinniny. Hope Larry sees this as he replied really quickly as going out of town. Thanks FB. Love Phillipa

Seldom I just read this study again and I think it says it's a risk also that after two years holidays from the meds are recommended. Hence what happens after two years as the meds don't start working til then? Talked to bioidentical hormone doc yesterday an ob gyn here and most of the meds he uses are FDA approved and he feels the bios and ca and vita D3 are better. I also found I'd seen the leading osteo doc his clinic Dr Kipnis google him let me know what you think my next move will be to see him he's the one who also reevaluated my lymes disease when first here. Jan, they're trying to sell something here.

No offense meant, but you have to filter out things on the internet if you're going to make an informed decision .. well at least in my opinion anyhow, things with HONCode on them, things from mainstream places.

This doesn't mean I don't approve of "supplements", but again those searches should be done at sites at least somewhat legitimate (actually some have HONcode too), etc.

Anyhow, while there are plenty "horror" stories about any medication and I'm sure there are Black Boxes on some, I don't know about Bisphosphonates... ultimately it comes down to you.

Trials of a medication should be given say a month at least to make any sense of whether it has too many side effects, has any benefit, etc.

Plus I agree with the comment from the previous poster -- most mainstream gynecologists would really warn against "bioidentical hormones"... there are dangers of those, and at best they don't really work.

Bottom line, Jan -- if you want to try a medication and you can afford to pay for it, it's up to you and you alone... yes, asking others for help is fine, but I think we went on this topic before ?.... one has to drop the fear.

Decide to take it, and give it a month or so, but please don't sit around in fear of both trying or not trying something. It doesn't help your situation.

I know its hard Jan -- I face these dilemmas a lot. Don't take this as any harsh criticism. Please take it as a nudging comment. Ok ?

-- take care

Jay

I can't tell you what your next move should be. With every single medication there is risk. Your doctors should inform you of those risks and help you with your risk/benefit decision.

But, ultimately, it's up to you.

That's all I can say.

Seldom.

Jay I know but a 30 day trial of a biosphosphante doesn't do a thing takes at least two years to show on Dexa Scan. You need to google Dr. Kipnis Charlotte NC. I saw him originally for lymes has the largest osteo bone center multi practice. Last one I got the Dexa from. If you look at the website he's and the other MD's are using all the different meds. Biophosphates negatively effect the osteoclasts get rid of them they clean out the bones. Love Jan

Philipa,

You might want to look at this link:

http://www.raysahelian.com/bisphosphonate.html

His site is way too commercialized for my tastes but I feel his research is pretty good on both drugs and supplements.

Here is his research on osteoporosis treatments:

http://www.raysahelian.com/osteoporosis.html

Also, look into eating prunes to help with osteoporosis. I can't find the link that I saw this but do a google search.

Good luck.

49er I'm the google queen I think I saw those two studies and saw the prune one last night. Good laxative also. When you read all the studies carefully and look for keywords and I've googled bioidentical hormones and have the written book of the doc I see here. It says may help to prevent. But what if you already have it and it's pretty bad? That orthopedic doc I saw scared me when he said he hoped he wasn't on call the night I need surgery and he has to wire me up and then I'm in a wheelchair. So far the internist hasn't even called with is dexa results. My last one was done at the osteoporisis and arthritis Center. It's googleable. Dr Kipnis is the one I saw. Thanks for taking an interest. Right now on 1500mg of calcium and vita D3 and magnesium. The prunes are yet to come. Love Phillipa

Phillipa,

See this article about a study that will determine if prunes can reverse bone loss.

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/60657.php

"Meanwhile, hopes are high for those plums. In a 2004 study he led while at Oklahoma State University, Arjmandi found that a diet supplemented with dried plums produced significant restoration of bone mass in female rats whose ovaries had been surgically removed."

Of course. rat studies don't always translate to human ones but I thought it was interesting.

Don't let that doctor scare you. Take the time to make the decision that is right for you.

49er printing this out to give the doc. If he didn't think I was nuts before he will now. And do I care no it's my body not his I did read this on one of my many searches. Heard haven't had time to google yet that boniva and actonel don't have the same ingrediant that fosamax has for the bone jaw necrosis. Now only a neighbor said this. Love Phillipa and thanks for taking the time my fingers are googling too much!!!!
