Neurontin Versus Zyprexa

Posted by bulldog2 on September 14, 2009, at 15:17:32

I have had decent luck with neurontin as mood drug.

Good anti-anxiety effects
moderate antidepressants effects
makes me more sociable
Just seems to brighten my mood and make me more eager to do things

I suffer from atypical depression, adhd, possible bipolar and social panic attacks

I have read that some people consider zyprexa a wonder drug. Is it similar to neurontin in its actions. If I have done well on neurontin would zyprexa be worth a trial? Does it work well in combo with other ads such as parnate which I was considering a retrial?

Neurontin has few side effects besides the ones that Lyrica has too, it can cause blurry vision (at least for me).

If it is doing something for you, that sounds great.

Have you been through the gamut of conventional antidepressants (other than MAOIs), e.g. TCAs, SSRIs, SNRIs, NRIs ?

The combination of symptoms I admit is hard to treat with one agent -- because the ADD spectrum one would use something like Strattera or even Ritalin and associated agents. It might also help with the depression. But it could worsen the panic attacks.

So polypharmacy is probably going to be an answer -- maybe something like Strattera and Neurontin.

Zyprexa is an atypical antipsychotic and has little to do with Neurontin, which is an AED and acts on GABA by being a derivative of GABA.

Zyprexa acts on blocking various dopamine subtransmitters as well as putting a blockade on some serotonin ones.

Adding a small amount of Zyprexa to an antidepressant and the Neurontin could also be a choice, it might be a mood brightener and help the bipolar attributes, but weight of course is an issue, dose dependent typically.

Or you might try Lamictal which could help with the bipolar and while monitoring for serious rash which is its biggest rare but possible side effect, it doesn't have a lot of other major ones and works as an antidepressant additive for a fair number of people.

just some thoughts

Neurontin (gabapentin) has been reported to be effective in treating social anxiety and social phobia. I don't know if Zyprexa (olanzapine) has the same potential.

Zyprexa doesnt affect GABA. It's good for mood swings. Yet, i still have them, it also causes wieght gain...

I think some people here already put that.
