Does Parnate increase prolactin levels?

Posted by maxime on September 9, 2009, at 18:02:31

I am wondering because I saw my endocrinologist today and she said that my prolactin levels are through the roof. It's most probably from the Thorazine/Largactil that I take. I am going to stop taking it soon because I think it's what is causing the weight gain.

So will Parnate raise prolactin levels?

Thanks in advance.

Maxie had a follow up MRI of pituitary gland today as a microadenoma six years ago. Micros don't cause lactation but macro adenomas of pituitary do have you ever had your MRI'd or whatever could be the reason for the lactation with so many of your meds? My endo ordered it. Also said if enlarge press on the optic nerve. Not good. Usually they are benign tumors. Love Phillipa

It seems that it will if serotonin levels are increased by taking tryptophan. The other thing I found is that Parnate can inhibit the response to the prolactin lowering properties of bromocriptyine. I could not find anything related to Parnate monotherapy or its combination with chlorpromazine (Thorazine; Largactil).

Thanks Scott. I am going to go off the thorazine because I believe it's responsible for a lot of my weight gain. My endo wasn't happy with my weight as I have gained a lot despite the fact that I hardly eat anything. One less med! If the hallucinations come back I will have to go back on it.

Thorazine will elevate prolactin levels.

Yes, thanks. That's why stopped taking it last night. Hoping that some of this thorazine weight will come off.

I've lost 5 pounds since I quit my thorazine last week. I hope it continues. I also hope that Parnate doesn't make me gain weight because I wouldn't be able to handle it.
