I have just discovered Honokiol, a substance found in Magnolia bark, used by the Japanese for centuries against anxiety and stress. It's supposed to have mild anxiolytic properties, without the sedation (unless you take large doses for sedation). It may also help with depression. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with it/has experience and/or an opinion. I'm looking for an alternative to the usual psychopharmacological stuff, due to all the side effects.
After 5 weeks of experimenting at different dosages of Remeron, I've finally stopped taking it. The side effects were too much and although I lament the lovely sleeps it gave me, I gotta try something else. I am firmly convinced that my anxiety/depression/insomnia is mainly (female)hormonal, with some cortisol overload due to prolonged stress. I am correcting some of that with HRT and various supplements , such as all the fatty acids and B6 (p5p), Calcium & Magnesium. I already feel better to a degree, but sleeping is still a bit of an issue. I have started on Relora,a honokiol supplement and hope that will also add to evening out any mild anxiety I will still get and relax me enough to sleep. Feedback please and thanks.

I tried Relora and didnt like it at all - made me feel tired with an ill feeling and felt strange. On the other hand I tried 100 mg purified Honokiol by itself and it was awesome how it worked. I slept well and very deep for three nights so far, felt refreshed and calm and not tired. Will see if it has tolerance but I have read it does not in animal studies. I'm going to keep taking it because it also helps with neuroregenation, is 1000 times stronger than vitamin E as an antioxidant, is anti-inflammatory for severe inflammatory arthritis, and many more benefits.

Hi, where did you get the purified Honokiol?

I tried a sample of 50% honokiol powder from a raw material supplier. It also has about 30% magnolol with it. magnolol is supposed to reduce excess cortisol which can interfere with sleep. I located where someone has a product with honokiol, other than Relora. I would be interested what other people think of it.

I ordered Magnolia Max from Freedom Nutritions following the link above. I will let you know how it goes. I am on the Emsam patch and hopefully this wont interact with it.
Will keep you posted

I would be cautious in using this with the Ensam patch though no study indicated that honokiol affected dopamine pathways (Ensam is selegeline which is a MAO-B inhbitor for elevating dopamine levels for those who dont know about this). Honokiol seemed to mainly affect serotonin, acetylcholine, and GABA pathways, not dopamine. Still all neurotransmitters have feedback loop effects in some ways, but honokiol may or may not have interactive effects with dopamine. Dopamine and GABA have some interactive effects which I'm not totally clear on. Sorry for all the pharmacology on this, I'm not sure where your interested level or experience is for that - others might find some of this of interest to them.It might be a good idea for one to check with their doctor first if they are concerned about potential side effects or adverse drug interactions. St John's Wort had a big effect on drug metabolsing enzymes causing some medications to have levels reduced by 90% in the blood. Not sure where honokiol stands on that. Of course most doctors tend to be conservative about using alternative medicine, especially herbally derived natural products and some might frown on using something like this especially if they dont know have enough knowledge much about it or dont have readily available access to medical information either. Seems that it has mild anti-anxiety effects, but so does chamomile tea, valerian, hops, passion flower - all legal herbal remedies without a prescription. On the other hand some doctors are for trying these remedies so it depends on what the doctor is like. I'm encouraged by how I've been feeling on this though, and still sleeping better too. Valerian gave me diarrhea, and I was allergic to chamomile. Honokiol seems to give a deeper more rested sleep which I think is related to its anti-stress hormone effects (might reduce cortisol)as well as non-habit forming GABA A receptor effects. It also seems to have antidepressant effects in lab studies, neurotrophic effects (brain cell growth/regeneration), cardiovascular benefits, and anticancer benefits. I have no financial interest in the sale of this compound, just hoping it can help others. Here are some of the links if interested in further reading:

I've only been on it a week but so far so good. The only possible side effect to report could be insomnia but I had it before I started it. The patch is changed every day. I do it in the morning after I shower but you can shower with it on if you need to.

>That is the problem with doctors. I'm pretty sure if I mention Honokiol to her, she won't know what I am talking about and tell me to not use it. However, if you say that Honokiol may affect Serotonin this may be a problem as with the patch you need to steer clear of all ssri's or serotonin enhancing substances. I will try to find out and check your links. Thanks
