wierd reaction to xanax?

Posted by mav27 on April 1, 2009, at 13:28:40

I rcently switched from clonazepam to xanax as i felt the clonazepam was making me feel depressed. Now on the xanax i feel like it's possibly making me feel agitated, angry, frustrated, bad tempered (about nothing at all, it's just those sort of feelings) and like my body doesnt want to stay still. Anyone had or heard of a reaction like this to xanax?

I have never heard of that kind of reaction to zanax. But I think you should trust your own experience. Sounds like it is not a good drug for you. I'm not sure, but it might be possible that even tho you are on a different benzo, you are still experiencing some withdrawal from the klonopin.

Though alprazolam and clonazepam are in the same family, they are very different drugs. It sounds to me like you are experiencing a mixture of clonazepam withdrawals and start-up side effects of xanax, but probably primarily withdrawals.

It might be what Bleauberry suggested: a withdrawal reaction to the discontinuation of clonazepam. The other possibility is that it is a paradoxical behavioral disinhibition reaction to the Xanax, where what you describe can be the consequences. It does almost the opposite of what you would expect.

Yeah i looked this up and it sounds a lot like how i was feeling. I was so restless all night but inside it was unbearable, i found myself pulling at my hair and clawing at my face and just clenching up feeling like the incredible hulk was trying to bust out.

Also i don't get this if i don't take the xanax, it's been many months since i stopped the clonazepam, and if i don't take the xanax i don't get any of these horrid feelings, just anxiety attacks ect.

Are you getting these feelings after the xanax wears off? (It has a very short half-life--don't know off the top of my head, but perhaps 5 hours). This can happen.

Nah, during the time the xanax would be still there... if anything i feel bettr as the xanax wears off. I take the xanax 3 times a day though so it generally doesn't have much time to wear off.

Xanax sometimes, i've read here, causes mild stimulation (wierd).

Alprazolam is tri-benzo, it's a bit diffrent than the main: diazepam, lorazepam.

Klonopin made me depressed, ugh....took it years ago, it makes you lethargic, feel lousy sometimes. But it's an antimanic, so i can see why it causes that in moderate doses 1-2mg.

Xanax lasts about 2-3 hours, how long are these symptoms lasting?

Hard to say exactly how long it lasts as i take it every 4 hours or so, and the other 12 hours of the day i'm asleep so i'm pretty much feeling it all day. The last 3 days though i havn't taken it and have taken 2mg of clonazepam per day instad and have felt much much better but can already feel the wierd depressed feeling it causes me creeping in.
Although the difference is i can cope with it's depressed feeling although it isn't nice where as with the xanax i was feeling so horrid inside i would have jumped off a cliff to get rid of the feeling.

Well, it's fast acting, and attaches itself to GABA-a receptor highly, that's why it's known to for it's "high-peaceful" feeling, but only lasts 3 hours, for me.

Thinking about it, alprazolam attaches itself high to GABA, and maybe, for some unknown medical reason, this why it's causing these effects. Halcion is good example, it "sedates very well" but when it wear's off, i've read articles, posts here "halucionations", psychotic reaction when it wear's off, it lasts 1 hour or 2, and it's potent, so withdrawl happens right after it off, GABA imbalance.

Sometimes, benzo's, even there known #1 for anxiety demenishing, some people don't react good to some of them.

Dexamphetamine, which is, a amphetamine, i've taken 2 spansules, and i go right back to sleep, only i wake irrtible, because i slept the whole duration of it. So, that's definelty an adverse effect. But, it depends, that's happened about 3-4 times. And other times, it does what it's suppost to do, help with concentration, motivation.

Diazepam is the only thing i can think of, that is good, and well-known for anxiety. Lorazepam also...

I can't think, but maybe there is other types of medications, that would work wonders, even if not for anxiety.

I'll try to think, i've researched for what 4 years? i forgot alot, because i lost intrest.

Take care

rj

well i've switched back to clonazepam and i feel a million times better.
No signs of extra depression yet... in fact it's bordering on a feling of euphoria.

2mg a day, i take it all at night just before bed. I don't know why it works so much better than the xanax did but it's great feeling so calm again.
