For me, they have worked about the same (I'm on a bit of both now) but the Lexapro is much gentler in terms of sexual side effects. On Zoloft I couldn't get turned on at all. On Lex, I can get turned on and have an orgasm--takes a little longer...and a second is pretty much a pipe dream ;) But I'll take that in return for depression remission.

Gee I would too so how to get my body to let go of this luvox that doesn't work? Both these antidepressants get good patient reviews. Love Phillipa

haven't tried l-citalopram but i did better on citalopram. it was the generic ssris response i had on it. overall a net decrease in mood, more flatness, genital dysfunction (i don't have libido problems on ssris). it did stop crying spells and mildly helpful for oversleeping. similar to fluoxetine and 75mg level of venlafaxine.

sertraline was bad, made crying worse and i started to get agoraphobia too, also when i started to frequently imagine bodily harm to myself/torture kinds of things happening. actually not so bad on sexual side effects side. overall very unpleasant experience. maybe as bad as antipsychotics.

Both felt like the typical SSRI thing. You know what I mean. But there were some differences.

My comparison is slightly clouded, because along with those two ADs I was also on 500mg Depakote and 5mg Zyprexa the whole time. With those as the backdrop, here is what I experienced:

Lexapro. A general worsening of mood, sometimes outright crying fits of despair. Only 3 hours one random morning did I feel wonderful. Other than that, it did not really do much for depression overall except slightly numb it, and it did zip for anhedonia. Side effects were fairly mild though. Some start up anxiety was pretty bad. AFter that, calm and sleepy. Sex drive was fairly ok, some anorgasmia, but ability was ok.

Zoloft. Felt an immediate boost the first day. Then it kind of faded away, but overall was better than Lexapro the whole time. No more crying spells. Depression was indeed improved some, but as with all SSRIs, it did zilch for anhedonia except make it worse. You know, that SSRI numbing thing. Anorgasmia was worse on Zoloft than Lexapro, but desire and ability were fairly ok. Many things make my ears ring louder than usual. Zoloft was a lot worse than Lexapro in that regard.

If I was limited to just those two meds and had to pick one, I personally would go for Zoloft.

Thank goodness there are other choices.

I really like Dr Gillmans strategies of combining his apparent favorite SSRI (Zoloft) with TCAs for a true SNRI combination that can be custom tailored. All the available SNRIs have such low action on NE it is almost inaccurate to call them SNRIs.

I found Cipralex to be slightly more effective than Lustral/Zoloft. It seemed to have a better effect on social phobia too - making me feel more confident in front of people. Unfortunately, even at the highest recommended dose, I still experienced anxiety and depression - even after months of treatment.

After about five months of taking the drug I seemed to stop responding to it altogether (the dreaded poop out) and my p/doc took me off it.
