Has anybody noticed that Dr Bob is looking much more youthful?

Please don't confuse my adorable granddaughter with Dr. Bob!!

Really. If she were old enough to understand, she might be offended. :-O

Sorry, Dr. Bob, but she's waaaaay cuter, and apparently therapeutic..... so speak the posters of Babble...

And her only "meds" are banana cookies and chocolate *anything* - if those annoying 'big people' who seem to control access to food let her have some ;-)

Funny subject line - I needed that....

"her only "meds" are banana cookies and chocolate"

so sorry, "10"; BTW can you give the dosages of her meds and how she's doing on them?

{grin}

okay, but I'd highly caution folks NOT to translate this regimen and apply it to psychotropic meds!!!

She has as many and as much of those ('specially the chocolate), daily, numerous times a day IF she can 'flirt' them out of her mom, dad or me....

She's doing great! I'm afraid if any of us tried this, the weight gain side effect would be prohibitive, ya' know? Her - she's tiny and can eat nonstop all day and never gains much - even when we want her to.....

Many years ago, there was some speculation that MAOIs could slow down the aging process.

I have no idea what the rationale was for this, but I hope it's true.

was this in reference to selegiline? it upregulates some antioxidants in the brain like SOD. Also MAO tends to create some neurotoxins as it metabolizes random stuff floating around in the brain. dopainergic degeneration even if not to parkinsons still results in symptoms of old age, i think this is why it extends life in some animals studdies. not aware of any other MAOI showing effects, although any MAOB inhibiting drug would share some of the effects.

These notions existed before the age of L-deprenyl. I still don't know where they come from. However, in the more recent literature dealing with free radical formation, it is thought that too much MAO activity is responsible for a great deal of it, and that any kind of MAOI will help prevent this from happening. I don't know that any of the propargyl derivatives like selegiline clean up the mess in addition to preventing it from occurring to begin with. If they do, then it might be a property of the molecule itself and not its MAOI properties. Either way, it would be interesting to investigate pargyline, another propargyl selective MAO-B inhibitor, in these contexts.

Dear 10derHeart,

All jokes aside. I really appreciate Dr. Bob. However, I have discussed this with my therapist and it is her professional opinion that the therapeutic value to Babblers in seeing an adorable baby picture, as opposed to a perceived authority figure, would not only enhance Babbler's mental well being, it could actually speed up the recovery process for some.

I would like to suggest, not to be pushy, that the picture be changed with the season, or, as an alternative, monthly.

I'm afraid that should this request not be granted, I've been advised to start a petition, moving across all boards. Its an assertiveness excersize prescribed by my new therapist. I'm sorry, I have no choice.

Please let me know asap as my therapist will want to see how I did at our next session.

She's REALLY Scary 10der....;-( please can you make this happen?

Sincerely,

~Jade

Jade don't get it? Never usually look at the pic just when someone changes it and they change quite often. I personally like l0der's sweet granddaughters pic. So What pics would you like to see? You know you can send pics to Bob and he posts them. KK's little boy was there for a while also. Phillipa

You are right. As you say, selegiline was first synthesized in the mid 1960s. I only remember that it was in the early 1980s before large numbers of clinical trials began for depression. It sucked. So they went back to some earlier work with Parkinsons to justify investigations into that disease and applying to the FDA for that indication.

It is hard to know what to make of selegiline as an antioxidant and neuroprotectant. The bulk of the work on this issue describe it as having a positive effect in these areas. I believe that there is something to it. What I want to know is if any of the other MAOIs produce the same protections. I know work is currently underway looking at rasagiline. However, there is NO work appearing on Medline that describes investigations of Nardil, Parnate, Eutonyl, or Marplan relating to aging and neuroprotection.

I guess the most convincing work regarding selegiline is some of the earliest where the lifespan of rodents was extended by it.

10derHeart,

You know I was kidding, right? lol It seems Phillipa may think I was serious. The only pic I've seen up there besides Doc Bob is your Grandaughter. I'm not gonna lie, I much prefer her smiling face as it does feel "therapeutic to see a small child so happy ;-)

Hi Scott,

When I was researching Emsam, I came across a study or studies, suggesting that selegiline was effective in extending the lifespan of rodents.
The only catch, in rodents, it proved to be effective only when dosed in very minute amounts. It was given in liquid form and there was a bell curve where if the rodents were given the "top" of the curve they lived maybe 20% longer, however, when given more than that there was no benefit. A much larger dose, I believe, as is used in A/d's was said to provide no life extending benefit. Hope I'm wrong. I may have those studies if they came with stuff I got on Emsam.
