transcranial magnetic stimulation

Posted by sam K on February 16, 2009, at 2:45:49

hey guys I'm wondering if this is available in each state or you have to fly out to get it. Stuffs just not working out for me guys, none of the meds ive been on seem like a long term solution. Although I avoid benzos.. (my doc doesn't like them, so I feel like he's persuaded me. But hes an ex-alcholic, so obviously he won't like them.)
Also, I'm 17 but I'll be 18 on June 20th. So they might not give this procedure to young adults.
Well I'm just in a trashy spot these days...... Hope I get better........

Do you mind saying which medications you've tried? And what your diagnosis is?

As for "TMS" I'm not familiar with it....

Hi Sam,

Welcome to the boards!

I tried rTMS about 2 years ago for depression. I found it to be effective for about 1.5 years. After that, the effect faded.

Feel free to ask me anything else about rTMS.

Kind regards,
Maria

no I dont mind at all telling what meds Ive tried.
I first tried Depakote, which was cruel (I was a non obidiant teen so they basically did that to settle me down) They thought I was bipolar, and I might be.. Then zyprexa, klonopin, lexapro, zoloft, luvox, seroquel, abilify, gabapentin, topamax, haldol, trazodone, prozac, provigil, ultram (wasnt prescribed and it made me super angry/rage), paxil, wellbutrin, pristiq, lithium, straterra, concerta (back then), cymbalta, nortrypilne, effexor... umm okay what the hell thats just bad. real bad somethings wrong with me. Im embaressed. buspar, every single supplement. But I didnt really combine them much. I should probably kill myself.... I mean I wont but seriously Im a failure. Ive messed this up, i just jump around on meds and I cant tolerate any of them.

I have social anxiety, major depression, anxiety, Im fragile if I do something wrong I can become mildly psychotic. (probably less than mild)
Oh I also have anorexia, so that could be why I'm not responding to meds because they will have weight gain and I have a super hard time dealing with that.
im really embarassed......

Just recently became aware of this treatment option when I came across a new study in press about rtms being safe with pregant women. I wonder if it can also be used for anxiety/depression sufferers?

Hi Maria,
I would love more info about rTMS. Would you do it again for another year and a half of depression freedom, or is it just too expensive?

Hi,

I tried rTMS in Vancouver a few years ago and didn't find it effecive. I do know somebody who has found it effective though. He suffers from atypical type of depression though, sleeping all the time and slowed thinking.

From what I have read Israel are now doing trials with something called Deep Magnetic Stimulation which is supposed to penetrate deeper into the brain than standard transcranial magnetic stimulation.

sam K,
hang in there. I have added 10 grams of EPA fish oil (unfortunately 20 capsules: Omega 3 Mood by Country Life at Iherb.com) and 18 grams of Inositol a day and it has done wonders for my depression and anxiety. :)

Hi,

I have some questions about rTMS.

Where did you have this done? I searched for this in my city (san francisco) and I can't find any facilities that do this.

I don't think my doctor has even heard much about it.

I'd like to try this but I don't even know where to begin to look for a provider.

Thanks.

i have seen some university research clinics web sites talking abotu their rTMS, that woudl probably be where you would find it, or they might know of another person using it, as its not a large number of people

Hi Hat,

Sorry for the late reply.

The last time I had rTMS done, it was paid for by an university. I took part in a clinical trial.
But if I were to become really miserable again and meds wouldn't work, I'd certainly go for rTMS again. It's such a soft, wonderful treatment without side effects.

Hope this answers your question?

Love,
Maria

do you mean the effect faded while still recieving it, or had the treatment ended? did it help all aspects of depression equally?

Hi D/R,

Effect only came into force about 3 months after treatment. I already felt better during treatment, but the improvement was only slight. After 3 months I could feel a strong improvement all over, on all aspects of depression. I asked the dr about this and he said it could be possible because of the 'cascade' effect of rTMS.

About 1.5 year after treatment I slipped back into depression.

Hope this answers your question?

Love,
Maria

yeah, thanks. it sounds quite interesting. was it weird at first? mayeb after the first few times it was just a machine where you go to read your book.

i think most 'long-term' improvements after starting a treatment are because the initial bit 'gets the ball rolling' and as things improve, one can better participate in life, which improves things further. the treatment is a catalyst though. true for you? what country are you from? it always seems to be universities.
