So my doctor has said she has no problem at all in giving me Nardil, Parnate, Lexapro+Abilify, Lexapro+Risperdal, Lexapro+Seroquel, or Effexor.
I've noticed a trend here and at other sites where lexapro by itself has mixed reviews, and with me was not a promising experience, but that when combined with one of those three antipsychotics it is a totally new drug with frequent good outcomes. Effexor I've never tried. The MAOIs I've never tried.
I have Parnate onhand and it looks to be the first up for trial. Being real sensitive I would probably start at 5mg and go by feel after that.
So I need help on the diet restrictions. I realize some people have no problems at all. But I want to be oversafe to start with. Below I will list foods I eat commonly. Please tell me which ones I can no longer eat. Also list other foods I defininitely need to avoid. Thank you so much!
Milk
Half n Half
Sour Cream
Yogurt
All breads, cereals, pastas are rice, corn, or quinoa based...no wheat, no barley, no beans (I am gluten free)
Chocolate semisweet chips
Chocolate ice cream
Chocolate milk shakes
Three Muskateers Bar
Fried, Baked, or Boiled Chicken
Fried, Baked, or Boiled Beef
Fried, Baked, or Boiled Pork
Pepperoni
Sandwich Ham
Hot Dogs
Potatoes...chips, baked, mashed.
Lettuces
Tomotoes
Avaocados
Cucumbers
Peppers, green, yellow, orange, red, and hot ones.
Dried cranberries.
STrawberries.
Bananas
Mozzarella Cheese
Colby Cheese
Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Cream Cheese
Decaf Coffee
Regular Coffee
Eggs
Bacon
SausageThe only OTC med I ever take is Ibuprofen.
What in the above list do I need to avoid?
What else should I avoid?

cream cheese and processed cheese slices are OK..I ate lots of chocolate on both parnate and nardil with no probs. No processed meats. No canned soups and make sure you read ingredients on packaged foods. The fresher the better. Yogurt is fine, but I would pitch it when too close to expiry date.
There is a good list on here..just google maoi diet. Good luck and safe eating!

Hi Bleauberry,
I got this list yesterday from my new PDoc, he is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Hospital and has been prescribing MAOI's for at least 15 years.
Please note that this is based on the newer less restrictive diet, as the older diet was found to have foods with miniscule amounts of Tyramine.ABSOLUTELY RESTRICTED:
Aged Cheeses
Aged and cured meats
Improperly stored or spoiled meats, fish, or poultry
Banana Peel (bummer), Broad bean pods, Marmite
Sauerkraut,Soy Sauce, and other soy condiments
DRAFT beer*Note: Marmite contains high levels of tyramine and has been implicated in numerous hypertensive reactions.
CONSUME IN MODERATION:
Red or white wine (no more that two 4-oz, glasses/day)
Bottled or canned beer, including non-alcoholic (no more than two 12-oz sevings/day)
**Many foods have been unnecessarily restricted because of sporadic case reports or known but irrelevant associations with migraine. Laboratory analysis did not identify high tyramine content in these foods. Previously restricted foods that can be consumed safely include avocados, bananas, bouillon, monosodium glutamate, peanuts, raspberries, and soy milk.
-I'll add to that I think anything you deem to be outdated in any way you may want to stay away from or check further re: that item.-Should you really be concerned about this diet I would suggest maybe following the older diet, the link is supplied by BullDog above, and then add in as you feel comfortable.
-An old poster "Elizabeth" posted "The short list", I believe a list she put together as her version of the new diet that some posters were using.
-Stay away from Soy products unless you know they are O.K. (Soy Milk OK)
Hope that helps!

If its near the top, I skip it. If the protien isn't coming from Soy I find I'm okay. But please double check this as YMMV. Btw- I find that mostly in packaged Protien Bars. There are some that are okay but bring your magnifying glass to read those wrappers.

basically what jade said. also, shrimp paste, oyster sauce, fish sauce. These would mostly be found in something like a thai curry.
Soy lecithin is not a problem. it is that soy is a commonly fermented product and results in soy sauce or similar items. its not the soy itself. of course actual (not processed) soy has some hormonal effects, which i'm not too up on, they seem to be negative for men, and i don't know if they are good or bad for women.

Hi,
Here is a pretty good article which shows the tyramine content of some common foods, plus some low tyramine menus. It seems to follow pretty closely to what I've learned being on a low tyramine diet for over a decade.
