1. Does anyone take Parnate and NOT need a sleep med?
2. Anecdotal opinions welcome...which is generally better for melancholic dysthymic double depression kind of stuff?

I was on parnate for the first 6 months of this year and didn't need a sleep med, parnate did a good enough job of putting me to sleep so i didn't need anything else.

BB, given the pattern of your reaction to meds generally, low dose Parnate may suit you, in which case the effect on your sleep need not be too bad.

I need a sleep med on Parnate, not so much on Nardil.
I think Parnate may be better for the kind of depression your talking about. I just think so because its (for most people) more activating and hits the "intrest/curiosity" neuros like DA harder at lower doses where you might not need a sleep aid.
For me Parnate is way different from Nardil. Nardil didnt take away my apathy. I didnt have the need or want to get things done. Parnate I get tasks done and dont let important things slide. eg. I remember things like" Oh ya I better get on Psycho-babble right away to see If I got a responce". Nardil was like "ah ya.. soooner or later ill check it".. that doest say much for the people who love Nardil.. Hope that helps a lil Blueberry

I can only offer my personal experience. I've been on Parnate for 8 weeks. Insomnia was insane for about a week, faded, then turned into late afternoon/early eve fatigue (literally my eyes would close and couple hours later I'd find what I was working on, on the floor). Most experience this. If you fight it, it passes. I had a few nights here and there where I would wake in the middle of the night and couldn't go back to sleep. And Finally, most, including me will re-experience insomnia for a couple nights at dose change. Except for that, sleeps been a breeze, haha.
Seriously, someone told me you have to commit, and all the sides fall away, and you reach the promised land. Ok, I paraphrased. But after 8 weeks, I take my klonopin and a 3mg melatonin and I'm asleep. I leave another melatonin by my bed in case. Doc said 6mg melatonin in one night is okay.I believe its a manageable side effect that will dissipate over time.
Sleep would not give me pause to try this med. However, some cannot tolerate that as a s/e.
