Geez - I was doing some reading today and cannot believe how many of us are having/have had weight issues from certain (many - most?) meds. It's so unfair. As if feeling so unwell mentally isn't enough. If I read one more manufacturer written article that says no weight gain noted I think I will scream.

For some reason never gained weight on meds. Maybe it's the thyroid although hypothyroidism is supposed to lead to weight gain. Now I did gain weight eating 12 truffles at night. Got some surgery and now can't gain an ounce. Wierd. What happens to metabolism on meds? Phillipa

I'll never understand it. I do know FOR SURE that Effexor made me crave carbs in the form of beer - not a good thing at all. I am glad you don't have to worry about your weight. It's such a drag and a never ending cycle - eating because you feel bad and feeling bad because you overeat or eat the wrong things.

Yeah, so many weight issues, but nobody ever considers mine. I am underweight and can't gain. Heck, even on Zyprexa I went from 138 to 148 and that's it. On no meds at all I weight 130.
I would like to gain some weight. You all can send your extra to me. :-)
Just know there is another side to the story. It aggravates me when I see all the latest greatest diet plans in every magazine, and entire books, but nobody pays any attention to us hard gainers.

I wonder If I'm the only person who gained weight on Wellbutrin? I was underweight when I started it (well, relatively speaking), then I felt so much better that my appetite increased about 3-fold & I actually gained weight.
Now if I could just _lose_ the 50 lbs I've gained on Remeron & Cymbalta.... I've tried taking up smoking again, but the side-effects are not so good ;-)

One thing I've noticed, when I take a med that makes me not hungry during the day (I have low blood sugar) boy I'll make it up eve/night time. And thats the worst time to eat!
And no, can't remember one med, if left to its own devices, that wouldn't cause wieght gain or was at best neutral.
Except, (not recommending for weight loss!) Parnate recently caused me to drop wieght so fast it was becoming a problem. Its slowly coming back now. Which actually is a good thing.
Another consideration, I do believe regardless of meds, certain types of depression cause weight loss, but many/most types cause weight gain.
I think I've been seeing on this board a couple (new?) augments/meds that do help with weight loss tho. May you find a med that is weight friendly!

No, you are not alone in weight gain on WB......it made me very hungry especially at first and I still think it has changed my metabolism 2 years later; can't lose even though I restrict calories and do aerobics and weights.
Google wellbutrin weight gain and you will find others. It is not the norm but it certainly happens to quite a few people.

I would love to lose my pounds and let you find them! Seriously though, I hear your plight and you are not alone. I have, inadvertently, run across the occasional article that deals with the inability to gain weight.
Mostly young men (excepting our dear Phillipa) and they drink and eat a lot of special, calorie packed drinks and foods. They might even throw a few truffles in! J/K but google it. I wish we could all live in a weight happy world.

Tony - I need to lose a lot, too. Fifty pounds would still leave me on the chunky side. A sixty pound loss would be about right. I've got a plan (that I admittedly deviate from at least once a week) to reach my goal by June 2009.
What wellbutrin does for me is make things (food, cigs, soda) taste pretty bad and not worth cheating. I am finding that I need more wellbutrin to keep this up though and doc doesn't want to prescribe more. I am on 200 mgs. twice daily (low dose) and he thinks I should use willpower, not "chemicals." He's a shrink for God's sake.

ITA, Jade with most meds causing weight gain (along with the depression) and eating at night.
I am having limited success for depression and weight loss with Wellbutrin but am thinking of augmenting it with OTC Dexatrim. OTC weight loss meds are different and much safer today that in the past but I still need to check for safety.
Glad for you that your weight is normalizing. = )

Wellutrin SR 200mg twice daily is the recommended maximum dose. Doses above this significantly increase risk of seizure.

> Glad for you that your weight is normalizing. = )Hi again,
Update: While I'm sure my diet of one bowl of cereal daily on Parnate was the cause of my weight loss, you'll be happy to know, that my eve cravings have returned. Beer is a MAJOR culprit for me too, as is wine. I drink them with dinner, but, well, you get the picture. Well at least I'll have the fun of catching up.
Its so hard to make yourself eat during the day when you're not even hungry. 6 small meals, Yuk!!! It would probly work tho, can you try it and let the rest of us know? hah!
Anyway, couple things: Wellbutrin ended up doing what Parnate is doing. Lost wieght at first, but the eve hunger (which for me is the worst), comes back as does the desire for cocktail hour. I only took meds in the morn tho. If you can sleep on Wellbutrin with an eve dose, more power to ya!! Let us know if that works!!
I think you said tho, no more Wellbutrin from PDoc. Would he add augment, or add another A/D? Especially as your depression is still problem? My dad reponded really well to the mix of Cymbalta and Wellbutrin (not to either alone). Don't know anything about Cymbalta, but what about new A/D in morn, and Wellbutrin late in day? Just a thought.
If not, seems GP would be more familiar with effective wieght loss meds. My GP takes one. She lost bunch of weight I remember.
Feel your pang/pain,
~Jade
