Hi,

I think some are augmenting Parnate with Desipramine.

I responded with all on your list for Parnate for 2nd week (++ mood). At 5 weeks, very mild A/D effect now. Have you been on Parnate and consistantly had that response? Augments? Thnx.

I believe desipramine is supposed to be an activating drug (probably after you get used to the initial start-up side effects). Also, you can get a blood level on this drug (not sure what the normal range is).

I am someone concerned by the genotoxic effects of desipramine.

Desipramine has been my best antidepressant by far (plus augmenters and a beta blocker to deal with the tachycardia desipramine gives me), although I haven't tried Parnate (which is why I didn't post right away, hoping others who have tried both would say, but, lacking that, I thought I'd chime in about one of the two). I did try a different MAOI, Emsam, and went up to its highest patch size, but didn't feel I was getting enough out of it to put up with the restrictions on food and other meds.

Hi Jade,

I responded well to Parnate in the past. I don't know about agumenting it with desipramine. I might take off!! I took Lamictal with it years ago and I'm still taking a bit now. I think that can augment antidepressants.

It's either one or the other so I'm weighing up which one to ask for first. Good luck with Parnate.

I could do with activating so long as it doesn't interfere with sleep. Don't like the sound of blood tests..

Thanks softheprarie. I had tachycardia and other heart problems years ago on dothiepin. I was hoping desipramine would be milder. Really it will have to be lofepramine because desipramine isn't available in my country. It is noted as having fewer cardiac side effects than other TCAs, but I don't know if it compares exactly to desipramine.

Does it disturb your sleep? I have problems concentrating and thought it might help, having been used in ADHD etc. What do you think?

I have sleep issues (including sleep apnea, for which I always use a C-PAP machine when I sleep, and some other problems), but I don't know that there's been a difference in them since taking desipramine. Attention-wise, I don't think I've noticed a difference, either. One problem with the desipramine is that I can't take stimulants with it, the mix makes my heart go nuts and I had some foul incidents. Sadly, I was in a car wreck (not on a stimulant) a month ago that was my fault, I was being inattentive, and I did wonder if I would have been on a stimulant would it have not happened? But, really, I don't think I recall getting improved attention out of the various ADD stimulants I've tried. It was medically made more justifiable for me to get them because I do have attention trouble, but I still wanted them even without the attention help, desiring mood and energy boost and a hope for perhaps a few pounds of easy weight loss (I am morbidly obese).

Hi,

I didn't mean that you have to have blood levels when on desipramine, just that you can if your doctor wants to get a general idea of the level in your system. No testing is required on a regular basis like when you're on lithium.
