Prozac, should i switched to Wellbutrin?

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on October 29, 2008, at 11:49:03

I'm on a schduele, i take 40mg on ODD days, and 80mg on even,

Prozac does increase, well not the mood, it just changes some perceptions you see life by increasing serotonin, and i've also heard it indirectly increaes dopamine.

I have been on Wellbutrin before, but i was read about, wellbutrin is good because d-amphetamine releases dopamine, and contant release of it, can lead to depression. But i take a low dose (Spansules) that spread through out the day.

Prozac at 80mg with Dexedrine does cause more "postive feeling energy". And i've read somewhere that Prozac itself, increases amphetamine's metabolites. But, what i heard on a site, was Wellbutrin was good for concentration.

The only thing...i was on it, and i had side effects, and i would always feel this "tingling" sensation. I thought i was, going crazy....

Whats really the diffrence in taking Prozac, from Wellbutrin? or any SSRI.

I know, because from expereince, Wellbutrin is more "locomotive" activating, but not as close as stimulants for ADHD.

My doctor said, the Prozac would help with anxiety. Sometimes, since Prozac was the (one) of the first SSRI's, it works diffrently than the rest. I feel hypomanic on it sometimes, and them sometimes, i feel horrible, i mean why do antidepressants...do the thing they do? side effects.

just a question, but if you could maybe reason...Wellbutrin V.s Prozac, Prozac is a pretty potent antidepressant, so it should keep nuerosmitters from "dying out". I just hope long term usage, is not going to "die out my brain"

thank;)

As far as I know they hit different neurotransmitters. How come the prozac high dose not every day would it maybe be better to take a lower dose everyday? Phillipa

Wellbutrin is NOT an SSRI. It does not affect serotonin at all. Wellbutrin is classified as an NDRI, norepinephrine dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It is FDA-approved for depression, but used off-label for ADHD.

Actually it does slightly affect serotonin, check out the prescribing info.

Theo,
I checked the prescribing info and here's what I found:
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Pharmacodynamics: Bupropion is a relatively weak inhibitor of the neuronal uptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, and does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or the re-uptake of serotonin. While the mechanism of action of bupropion, as with other antidepressants, is unknown, it is presumed that this action is mediated by noradrenergic and/or dopaminergic mechanisms.

I'd be interested to read the source indicating that bupropion affects serotonin. I'm not saying you're wrong, just never heard that before.
