I drank a small glass of red wine. I also took my meds at the same time, 40mg Celexa and 0.75mg Risperdal.
I also take 2 fish oil capsules, a vitamin D pill and a vitamin C pill at the same time.
I had half a burger before I drank the wine.
I ate an apple while drinking the wine.
I really don't like drinking alcohol, but I'm drinking red wine because I read that it's good for you.
Anyways, right now I feel kind of nauseous.
Are my meds ok to take with alcohol?

What is the active ingredient in the OTC sleeping pill? It will say on the container.

It's diphenhydramine Hydrochloride 50mg.

Diphenhydramine hydrochloride has additive effects with alcohol and other CNS depressants (hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers, etc)
Are you feeling better, worse, or the same?

Deneb why not just drink the grape juice. You can't drink alchohol with the meds you're on and you don't even like alchohol you say. I think you will sleep tonight. Tomorrow you might not feel so well. Phillipa

>It is not a good idea to be taking alcohol with stacking things that are CNS depressants, and that is probably why you are feeling nauseated.
You could also be allergic to the sulfur dioxide that is placed or is natural in a lot of red wines, but if you've drank it before I assume you know that.
But it is definitely not a good idea to take alcohol with Benadryl. And I forget if Risperdal potentiates things too.
If you're going to have a little glass of wine, don't take it at the same time as your medications -- have it much earlier in the evening.
If you're a female, I'm not sure, I forget, of course alcohol is more potentiating.
Of course this could be a red herring -- not to say the above isn't still true, the burger might have been a bit off.
And as for the effects of red wine -- its may be the reservatrol in it, but its probably the antioxidants -- which are in grapes. So have grape juice, or any of the recent and past promoted antioxidants, acai, pomegranate, blueberries, etc.
And also its really any form of alcohol (modest) that might "promote" health benefits, not really just red wine -- but as they say, all in moderation, especially in this light.

Diphenydramine kind of makes me feel gross. If you're not a drinker, even a small amount of booze can make you feel sick, especially added in with your meds.
If alcohol hurts your stomach, I think you should take Phillipa's suggestion and drink grape juice.

Thanks for all the advice.
I think what I'm going to do is finish this bottle of red wine I still have, and then start drinking grape or pomegranate juice. It'll take me a few days to finish the bottle. Right now I'm half way through the bottle.
I think I'll just drink the wine earlier in the evening and not mix it with my meds.

You could also throw it away or give it away.
Why drink something you dislike so much?
Especially alcohol, which does put some 'stress' on the body, processing it, etc. Not that I'm saying a healthy person can't drink a glass a day, if they wish. But it *is* alcohol.
For an otherwise healthy person, the unpleasantness and risks seem to outweigh the possible long term benefits of the anti-oxidants.

I've taken all those meds and I drink. No problems!

We're all different, with different chemistry. I think the above-said is sound. My tolerance to alcohol has shrunk though I still like the taste of it. I just don't drink much of it. If it's just a random bottle of wine and not some priceless vintage (actually just forget that anyhow -- your health is more important) and it really is making you sick as someone pointed out, just dump it. See what happens -- if it goes away, well you know one variable. If its something else, then you can deal with that too.

I agree, if it makes you sick you shouldn't drink it. I don't drink a lot. Just enough, 2-4 drinks.

I just saw my pdoc, talked about some stuff and then decided that maybe the alcohol is making me feel sad.
She said a lot of asians don't have a lot of alcohol dehydrogenase or something and that I may be especially sensitive to the effects of alcohol.
So I'm going to stop drinking for now and see if that helps.

Asians of some descent do have less of a tolerance to alcohol. Some people get effects of a flushed face. Its a cytochrome processing thing I believe, I forget that is missing or low, as your doctor noted.

Sounds like a plan.
