Anyone else had VNS?

Posted by greywolf on September 18, 2008, at 18:17:39

I just received approval for VNS surgery, which I will have next month. I was wondering if anyone has had it recently and what their experience has been. It's kind of a last resort thing for me, and I'm hoping against hope that it will help.

Please post a lot about it. Post over and over in case I miss it.

I want to hear about how it goes for you. And about all the little stuff they don't tell us. You are going to have it happening to you so you can tell us everything about what the operation is like.

Thanks. Good luck. I bet it works.

Hi Greywolf.

Without disclosing any names, I will mention that one of the posters on PB has had brilliant success with VNS. It is not a globally ineffective treatment as some people would suggest.

i remember a while back someone posting kind of as a side comment (in reference to a meds thread) that they had it done and it worked better than any med they were on.

Best wishes!

I think insurance companies had a lot to do with the view of its ineffectiveness since they basically refused to pay for it in many cases. Also, there was a small but vocal group who campaigned against its FDA approval. Its sad to me, because there were no obvious safety concerns, and there would not have been such a campaign against a drug in a similar situation. I don't remember campaigns against it for epilipsy treatment either, which it was used for already.

Thanks for your support, folks. This is a pretty big step for me given that it's surgery, but the only thing I have left is this or ECT, and I can't do ECT.

I'm going for the pre-surgical workup in a few days, and I'll update everyone once I have the device implanted.
