I think insurance companies had a lot to do with the view of its ineffectiveness since they basically refused to pay for it in many cases. Also, there was a small but vocal group who campaigned against its FDA approval. Its sad to me, because there were no obvious safety concerns, and there would not have been such a campaign against a drug in a similar situation. I don't remember campaigns against it for epilipsy treatment either, which it was used for already.
