Hi,
I met with my new p-doc last week b/c my old p-doc of many years finally retired.
The new p-doc went over my meds with me and of course asked how they were doing. The only thing I mentioned was that the Remeron I had been taking for many years now had caused me to gain about 20 lbs.
The new p-doc then fired back and stated that "Remeron in higher dosages does not seem to cause as much weight gain than the lower doses". I take 30mg each night. She told me to consider raising the dose.
So, is this true? Has anyone had any exerience with higher dosages and decreased appetite?
I basically use the Remeron b/c it makes me sleep like a baby. But at higher dosages does it cause more sedation or less?
I have read where the max. daily dose is 60mg. Anyone taking this amount daily?
Just wanted some actual opinions of people (like me) who actually have to take these meds.
Hope to hear your responses.
BRC.

I take 45mg daily in a single dose and find that it's finally weight neutral for me. At first when I was starting out (I think at 15mg?) I was incredibly ravenous and ill tempered. Eventually I got up to the dose I'm at now, and augmenting with 20mg generic Prozac. It's working pretty well, the least side effects I can remember experiencing, which in itself is remarkable.
For me it took a good 6 to 8 weeks to adjust fully to the dosage and get the full benefits from the medication.
Good luck,
PartlyCloudy

> BRC.60mg is a serotonin blasting dose for Remeron, I dunno, I tried at 52.5 at one point.
Some doctors will have a group of a population that they see it is weight neutral or less at a higher dose.
Personally, my doctor has never seen any weight reduction at a higher dose and in fact hunger increases as the dose is raised. I think that a majority of the weight increase comes from increased hunger.

Hy manic666
In my opinion, you put weight because of (powerful) histaminic properties of Remeron which tends to retain water under tissues. To put 2lb.'s of fat in two days you have to eat an extra 3500 calories of your normal daily food intake. It happen to me the same when I was put on Doxepin (powerful antihistaminic too) for sleep.Dunno

The deal with mirtazapine is even low doses pretty much saturate your histamine receptors. Then as you increase the dose, the drug has more effect on noradrenaline.
Antihistamines mess up metabolism and cause weight (fat)gain in the long term. MIrtazapine is a unique drug but i do not like antihistamines for sleep if you can find something else that works.

Hi desolationrower,

Since my big problem is sleep I would like to ask you:
Which drug do you take in the evening for sleep?
Best regards,
X-ray

Well, my problem is being awake, ever. I have delayed-phase sleep problems, that melatonin helps with (and morning stims and exercise). Occasionally i use a few hundred mg theanine. It knocks me out but it would have tolerance for day to day use. Hm, I used to have some difficulty falling asleep (i do not have insomnia problems once I am sleeping). Meditation helped me learn to quiet my mind so that helped quite a bit. Sorry i don't have personal experience with mirtazapine, best of luck.

This is my take on Remeron. I have problems with insomnia. So, seeing how I don't like to rely on sleeping pills for long term use, Remeron 15mg. fits the bill... for me.
I consider it my sleeping pill, it doesn't bother me that I rely on it for sleep, it's classified as an A/D so I may be getting some therapeutic value out of it as well, who knows?
Yes, I have to watch my weight, but sleep deprivation is not for me!
If I'm not getting proper sleep I might as well throw all my other meds out the window as my ability to cope suffers dramaticaly. So, I can deal with my weight with proper diet and exercise. I can't deal with insomnia.
Remeron, 5+ years and it's still effective with no apparent side effects.Just my 2 cents.
Regards, Rick
