Which Meds make ADD worse????

Posted by qbsbrown on July 22, 2008, at 20:00:25

I've noticed that all SSRI/SNris, anticonvulsants, and antipsychotics make it worse.
the only problem is that we are trying to treat bipolar II as well.

Hopefully I'll get a little relief with the Provigil, because the stimulants induce a little too much hypomania.

Im on strattera and Lamictal currently, i would say the strattera is helpful but if i end up needing to take a valium or seroquel for some reason it totally throws me off and i get sort of depressed and strange.

Is Strattera a bit more helpful for Inattentive type ADD than provigil?

Yes, if i take any antipsychotic, it throws me in to depression.

I too am currently taking Lamictal 25mgs and rising. Causes me great anxiety, so am on Ativan

Im the poster boy for inattentive adhd so yeah it apparently does. Im on 300mg of lamictal and its pretty activating when you're bumping doses up but eventually becomes pretty effective for anxiety. Getting to a correct dose is just the hard part.

Strattera is interesting and might cause some anxiety but its worth it as far as motivation and focus goes.

> I've noticed that all SSRI/SNris

I have read many times that SSRIs are helpful for ADD, but from my personal experience, they are useless. Not sure if they make it worse. Probably.

> anticonvulsants,

Perhaps Phenytoin is an exception. At least for some people. Have you ever tried it?

Provigil IS a stimulant. Just pharmacologically different from Amphetamine and Methylphenidate.

As to what else makes ADD worse. I don't know. I think anticholinergics, benzodiazepines, antihistamines and other sedatives.

I have more of a question relating to this topic. A couple of years ago I tried Adderall for depression. I felt great for about a week- actually felt like doing things, etc. Then I cycled up & down. Then I added Abilify & ended up in the hospital.
Now I am on Lamictal (probably bipolar II). Any idea on if it would be "safe" to add Adderall or a stimulant with Lamictal on board?
It's scary- I'm at the end of the road w/ meds but refuse to continue feeling this way, but the cycling Adderall caused before could be dangerous.
-thx

I would be weary. I added a stimulant to lamictal, and it put me in a mixed mood/state for a month (they normally last days).
