'Awakenings' on atypicals

Posted by med_empowered on June 26, 2008, at 19:05:34

since I've started my new combo, I've had a sort of "awakening." Whats great is that I see the possibilities in my life; what sucks is that I'm suddenly more in touch with my emotions and I feel shame over all the crazy things I did while I was...ummm...crazy.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi,

Would you mind elaborating a little further? I'm also atypical, so I'd be interested in this subject.

What is your new combo?

And what possibilities are you able to see that you weren't able before?

You mean to say that you have made a great improvement with this new combo? How is it helping you, and what things are you able to do now that you weren't able to do before?

What's your original diagnosis?

I'm on depakote, abilify, Klonopin, and Ambien when needed (rarely needed).
I've been diagnosed with psychotic depression and schizophrenia before, but now my Diagnosis is Bipolar type I; my shrink says that some people w/ my kind of bipolar "seem" schizophrenic at high and low points.
ANYWAY, the "awakening" is like this: I suddenly want to take more responsibility for my life, I suddenly "get it," if you know what I mean. Like, I respond to social cues better, I care more about things, I'm more interested in developing hobbies, my outlook is less bleak (although I still have slumps).
Its a good thing overall, but its bizarre to be made more in touch with my emotions by way of taking a medication.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy being part of life again. The part of your post where you said you felt shame for the things you did when you were so ill touched me. "you" weren't responsible for the things that happened when you were so ill...so try not to revisit the past too much and beat yourself up over something you had no control over. I think it's great that you've found the correct diagnosis and are now on the right meds to help you lead a calmer life..

EXACTLY! This is what professional health-care workers have observed consistently when a patient finally "awakens" from a chronic schizoid or psychotic state.

First of all, congratulations on the new-found freedom that you made happen for yourself. You are making different choices now than you had in the past. APs are not the enemy. Nor are they without side effects and risks. I was adamant about not taking one when my doctor first suggested it.

Yup. Me. I suffered several psychotic manias as the result of inappropriate administration of psychotropics. Once I emerged from this altered state, I felt profoundly embarrassed by the things I did while severely manic and psychotic.

With depression, there is still some sense of control of your behaviors. With psychosis, there is no such control. Being out of control can elicit feelings of impotency.

You may look back over your shoulder from time to time at the embarrassing "caziness" and the lost years. However, keep the orientation of your body forward and continue to take positive steps. I have forgiven myself for my behaviors while manic. It is freeing.

Have FUN! Whenever you can. It will help offset the hard work you have ahead of you.

I'm on a combination of Cymbalta 60 mg/day and therapy. My therapist uses regressive hypnoanalysis. I've been on these therapies since March.

In recent weeks, I have had periods lasting a few days at a time where I have felt truly alive. It feels great.

Yes.

When I was on the much lower dose of zyprexa for a number of years. I did some realy weird and stupid stuff. I was hyper all the time, overly anxious to say/do stuff on the split of a second. Just saying realy stupid stuff. Anyways not going into detail.

Hey, I don't know about you guys, but antipsychotics never woke me up, they mainly put me to sleep. They also made me feel more disconected and out of it.

Everybody is different.

Go with it till it stops workin for ya.
