I recently added Buspar to my 20mgs Celexa and 100mg Lamictal bid to aid in concentration, reduce jaw tenstion and almost daily headaches and reduce anxiey. I know that I could just increase the Celexa but that has a lot of drawbacks for me.
The buspar was great for anxiety and headaches before the irritability started. I scaled back to taking just a nighttime dose, but now I get a "coming down" feeling toward the end of the day, followed by a headache that I can't get rid of. It is far worse than the original headaches
I like the other effects of buspar, so I added a small morning dose thinking that it would stave off the evening "coming down" headache.
No luck so far. Four advil won't touch it.
Anyone have similar experience or advice?
Thanks.

Hello Porkpiehat,
I have been on Buspar for 15 years.
This is a mild drug that has few side-effects.The daily dosage should be divided into three separate and equal doses.
For instance, morning, noon and afternoon.
(10 mg + 10 mg + 10 mg) or (15 mg + 15 mg + 15 mg).I am on 50 mg Elavil in the evening for sleep, but I don't like to take Buspar at the same time.
However, I don't know how Buspar mixes with Celexa and Lamictal.
Best of Luck,
X-ray

Hi
Some years back I was on Celexa (Cipramil) + Buspar with little succes. In general I did not like the effect of Celexa very much. It was too sedating for me.
At the moment I am trying Prozac + Buspar. It may be a little premature to make any final conclusion after 3-4 weeks but it seems very promising. It has reduced my jaw tension and headache a lot. I also find it very mood lifting and pro-sexual and it has reduced my need for sleep.
I cannot say much about the effect on anxiety as this is not my reason for taking it.
Note that Buspar MUST be taken several times a day due to short half-life.
My present dose is:
Prozac 20 mg/day
Buspar 3 x 10 mg/dayI hope this can help you.

Hi! You are getting a withdrawal headache from taking Buspar just once a day. Try it 3 times a day and make sure each dose is as far apart as possible. This way you won't have that "too much serotonin" feeling (getting sleepy or ramped up, whatever it does to you).
One way to make sure you have a withdrawal headache is to take a small dose of Buspar to see if it alleviates the headaches when you get them.
I take Buspar with Zoloft and it does help the anxiety with an SSRI enormously but I must say I still get muscle tension now and then...
Be well,
jflange

Have you actually experienced the HA's from this?
Thanks

Yeah, I definitely get headaches when I forget to take a dose of Buspar. I know the prescribing information talks about it building up in your blood, but trust me, it has a short efficacy and you will feel it when you miss a dose. And like you said, no painkiller gets rid of my Buspar withdrawal headaches.
I take Zoloft once a day and Buspar 3 times a day. What was really important for me was to take the Buspar at a time that was spaced as far from the ssri as possible. Otherwise (when I took both at the same time), I felt ramped up and then exhausted. Maybe try to take Buspar 2 times a day at least, and space it away from your other meds. See if it decreases the irritability?
I have never taken Lamictal, so I am not sure about that interaction.
Be well,
jflange

thanks for all your help. Luckily I seem to be past the irritability stage.
I kind of enjoy the come downs a little bit toward the end of the day. I feel a little less "numbed out" for a few hours.
How long have you been taking this? Are you able to forget about it having to take it tid or do you obsess about your brain chemistry non-stop like me?

Hi Porkpie,
Of course I obsess about my brain chemistry! :)
But I have been taking my zoloft and buspar for 5 years now and I am just so happy that I found some relief from anxiety and panic.
Sure, there are times when I get muscle stiffness, or I wish I didn't have to take pills, etc. but I don't want to go back to square one because I really tried everything before I got onto the psychotropic drug bandwagon, which worked - after 2 years of playing with doses and meds and a lot of frustration. And once I started to feel ok, I just started to obsess about other things than meds! ;)If you are feeling uncomfortably doped up during the day by your meds, even by buspar (it happens), but you like the combination you are on, then really consider a different dosing schedule during the day. It made a huge difference for me, for example, to put as many hours as I could between a morning and afternoon dose (like 6 or 7 if possible). Otherwise my heart pounded, I couldn't think and then I couldn't keep my eyes open. I was a mess. But I don't feel this way when I keep on a schedule.
Be well,
jflange
