Oxytocin hormone plays a role in reducing fear in social situations. Could lead to better treatments for this disorder.

It's been discussed before on here. I've never taken it myself, but I did recommend it to two people and they didn't have very good results with it. I don't think they were specifically social phobcs though. Here are some links:

The point of the article is not that the use of a nasal spray containing oxytocin should be used as a treatment for social phobia or anxiety, but that the discovery of the hormone oxytocin may be involved in the regulation of our amygdala, and this could lead to the development of drugs which target this hormone thus improving the regulation of amygdala activity.
Forget about the nasal spray. It just led to the hypothesis which will spur research on this issue.

For starters if it was true it would be illegal as you would be drugging other people against their will.

Yes, I know. The idea is to spray it up your nose before a difficult social encounter. There are clinical studies that show people are more trusting when they've been exposed to oxytocin. I'm not sure whether oxytocin meets the criteria of being a drug, since it's a natural hormone. But anyway, I did not endorse the material on that website. It gives people curious about the effect the spray has on social phobia an opportunity to try it, that's all.
