I am used to waking up anxious and full of dread, but once the wellbutrin (I take 150SR with bkfast) kicks in I feel calmer. I haven't even taken klonopin in 48 hours.

anybody else have this "paradoxical effect?"

Yes, I believe so. I had a depressive episode that started last summer - I have BP2 - and was accompanied by the most dreadful anxiety I'd ever experienced. I'm currently on 300 mg of Wellbutrin along w/900 mg of lithium, and my anxiety has diminished considerably since I added the Wellbutrin. Hope it continues to be effective for you!

Not with Wellbutrin but methylphenidate (Ritalin/Concerta). Or it may be more accurate to say that it increases self-confidence and reduces uncertainty and worrying.

That's a fairly atypical response. Its could be due to the increase in dopamine that the wellbutrin induces. Norepinephrine tends to exacerbate anxiety. I actually find that drugs like adderall tend to reduce my own anxiety levels, especially in the morning.

I also take abilify... and zoloft... and lamictal.. and and and sonata, and until 3 days ago clonazepam and fairly regularly sonata.

It is definitely dependent on wellbutrin. because I notice that it goes away right about the time that the wellbutrin wears. off. there is a bit of mercy in the story afterall.

Now that I think of it - I had a constant headache with Wellbutrin. It's a bit muddled for me as I also suffer from migraines, and there are times when the headache doesn't quit for weeks on end, but, you're absolutely right in attributing yours to the WB.I was in a bad mood for the entire duration I was on that medication; over a year. (I wonder if my DH even noticed?) An awful lot of that was that never ending headache, that didn't respond to any OTC remedy.
So I guess you're supposed to schnibble a piece of toast first thing in the day, and then take those pills, eh?

I took Wellbutrin for many years. It definitely causes headaches. I found the higher the dose (or as in your case the addition of an SSRI) the worse it is. I took it in conjunction with Depakote. There was a fine balance between what would help and what would make me sick. It got so bad I would even alternate between the dose that would make me feel better, but gave me a headache, and a dose that was not quite enough to give me some relief.

Judging by the prescribing information for each drug, it doesn't appear that Wellbutrin has a higher incidence (only 26% vs. 23% for placebo) of headache than modafinil or methylphenidate, but you may wish to try these for comparison.
Interestingly, I seem to have occasional migraines without headache. More specifically, the symptom is called a scintillating scotoma, which is a flickering region of disturbed vision, starting in the central visual fields and slowly expanding and moving toward the edge to finally disappear:

>I don't know cool, exactly, but at least an interesting phenomenon. The first two times or so were scary... I started looking into glaucoma and other possibilities, and someone suggested "mini-strokes" and carotid artery obstructions.

like a sledgehammer every morningi think it's very likely the wellbutrin
some people find the headaches go away after 3 or 4 weeks
if you google wellbutrin+headaches you will find some examples

I'm so glad you've found something that is working for you. Maybe this isn't a paradoxical effect and it's just working really well for you. I'm crossing all fingers and toes that you continue to feel the calmness. It must feel really good to get relief from the anxiety. I've had paradoxical effects from meds but never as long as 3 weeks and counting. Wowzers!
