Well maybe one step forward and l0 back as saw the endo today and in eight weeks thyroid TSH went from a healthy normal of 1.08 to almost 15. So he of course upped my synthroid. Also said that the anviety that goes with it is a real disease and needs to be treated. Sad thing is he said even with him as a referral he couldn't get me a pdoc appointment without waiting at least three months. That since the migration to Charlotte NC is so huge that all the docs are full and that more have moved here to practice but can't fill the gap. Also the specialty docs the same. He wants another GP that might do something other than refer so the search goes on. Now for a GP. Was better off where we lived before. So guess the old pdoc is it for now or I play doctor as of course the endo said he doesn't treat anything but endo things. Phillipa wonder if other parts of Nc are the same. Ia anyone knows a good pdoc here please babblemail me or post it here. Thanks

You might want to look into a depression doc too... just as a thought.

~~~ Yes, that is good. If you have a stand alone Anxiety Disorder without comorbid disorders as the cause of all emotional distress, intense therapy and the monitored and careful use of an anti-anxiety agent might be just the tickets to emotional wellness and stability.I did the above for for quite some time - intense, I mean INTENSE CBT and a benzo alone. The unfortunate part was my fixed belief I had JUST an Anxiety Disorder. I was wrong. The problem with a fixed belief is their very definition - being fixed and unyielding to questioning.
That was my situation, your's, of course, could certainly be completely different. I do caution that if you're hanging your emotional wellness hat on IF you could JUST get your anxiety treated and controlled you'll be feeling contented and functioning great, to question once control of those symptoms is achieved, are you feeling contented and functioning great?
Was until the thyroid went funky up and down what apppeared in labs to be hypo looked like a neurologist to be hyper. Now it up to l5 TSH that is most would be tired I am but anxiety keeps away the sleep. Two hours on the phone today and couldn't even get a GP, internist, all full, so had to go the the one saw two years ago, Medical care is really bad here. Too many people not enough docs. This in itself leads to anxiety. And from anxiety depression follows. Therapist isn't even doing CBT anxiety is too high. So many nightmares. Very sad Phillipa
When my Hypothyroidism was under treated, I had terrible anxiety and could not sleep, was also depressed. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos thyroiditis which can cause your TSH to fluctuate as your thyroid is attacked by antibodies your body makes against the thyroid. As the thyroid deteriorates it sometimes puts out large amounts of thyroid hormone and sometimes none....it sputters. My advice would be to have your endo test for thyroid antibodies.
My TSH levels are suppressed (.01)to keep my thyroid from having a tantrum.
My P doc was the one who recommended that the endo test and follow this course. That was two years ago and it worked like a charm. I was skeptical, but pleasantly surprised.
Thanks for the response and we are twins in that I also have Hasimotos so you say you feel the best very low or hyperthyroid? So many say between l-2 is best. But I was told it is when you feel best. Did high give you high anxiety? Love Phillipa
I have never had hyperthyroid symptoms with my TSH being supressed. I had really bad anxiety (needed lots of xanax)when my TSH was higher. My TSH was actually never above 5. I also had extreme fatigue, brain fog, dry skin, severe depression and a laundry list of other hypo symptoms. I had just gone through a major life stress when my thyroid went to crap.
My p doc told me that anxiety and insomnia can also be from hypo, not just hyper. I think because the low thyroid hormone levels contribute to the depression, which breeds the anxiety and insomnia. I was on several different anti depressants and none of them did anything until the thyroid hormone was added. The combination of AD and Thyroid did the trick. I am now only taking a small amount of Zoloft for PMDD.
I can't say for sure how you would respond to more thyroid hormone, it might give you more hyper symptoms. Make sure you have your FreeT4 and FreeT3 levels tested. When those are in range, I feel good. That is what my doc and I go by because the TSH isn't all that reliable for someone with Hashi's.Below is a thyroid forum on about.com. I learned a ton from these folks! Good luck in your quest.
The anxiety can be caused by low thyroid hormone levels, high thyroid hormone levels, thyroid replacement hormones. Different people react diferently to the hormone replacement and if you take too much or increase too fast, it can cause anxiety. I know this isn't all that helpful but, treating the anxiety with anti-depressants and/or benzo's is a good option to help until the hormones are straightened out
Well said and mine jumped up very high l4 years ago then two years after that and now recently again. I've found that at low levels much more energy but still anxiety. So aim is for around 2.5 at this time as endo said with hasimotos that is a good TSH. Adding cytomel for t3 isn't good for me as the t3 rapidly changes during the day and the cytomel only lasts a short time. So doc took me off it. Phillipa
