I've seen lunesta and meds of this class referred to as pseudobenzos but google doesn't show the word any advise? Does that mean lunesta and that class are not in any way related to benzos? Thanks Phillipa

Philipa,
They are commonly referred to as the "Z drugs". They work almost identically to the benzodiazepines, as in they affect the BZD (benzodiazepine) receptors. They have different affinities to different BZD receptors, but so do benzodiazepines. In my mind, they are the same. Although the drug companies claim less dependance and addiction, I doubt this is true. The only real difference is that ambien and lunesta are more sedating and less anxiolytic than some of the other benzos. But then something like temazepam is similar, and it is a pure benzo.
Someone correct me if I am wrong on any of this. Hope this helps...

Yes, this would be a good description. Unfortunately, it might encompass old (discontinued) things like ethchlorvynol, glutethimide, and methaqualone, which are technically also nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics... Or wouldn't something like rozerem fall into this category? And it is much different than the Z drugs...

According to my sources, that's the class most of those "newish" sleep meds are considered.

Zopiclone, Zolpidem, Zaleplon
I think that monicker orginates from them being "Z's" and a play on zzzzz's?
The above listed names kinda sounds like it could be a law firm.... ironically. (Smile)
