Antipsychotics with activating antidepressants

Posted by jms600 on January 15, 2008, at 17:02:21

Hi everyone,

I have finally managed to get an emergency appointment with my psychiatrist for Thursday (I'd have preferred much sooner but that's the next available one he had)!

From the advice I have had here I think I will ask about a low dose of an antipsychotic (for my excessive anxiety and feelings of despair) combined with an antidepressant. Trouble is I don't know which antidepressant to ask to try. I think I need something quite activating - as I have low motivation and am completely disinterested in day-to-day life. I've also got zero motivation.

Could anyone recommend a suitable antidepressant that's quite 'activating' and energising, yet will be safe to take with an antipsychotic such as Zyprexa, Risperidone or Seroquel?

Thank you for your help!

In the SSRI class prozac is viewed as the most activating. In my experience it was. I added zyprexa to it later and it was quite a good combo. Both of them offset the side effects of the other while at the same time working synergistically. It was like the sum was greater than the two parts added together. 1+1=3. I later added a low dose of adrafinil to it and that was the best I've ever been.

There are all kinds of antipsychotic/ssri combos. The most popular and FDA approved for bipolar and treatment resistant depression is prozac+zyprexa. Another popular one in scientific journals is celexa+risperdal.

I always find drugs with a primary NRI action to be most activating. Desipramine, bupropion, reboxetine. Dont know if they're contraindicated with certain APs though. Ask your doc.

As bleauberry said some find certain SSRIs activating, but I found them all to sapp my energy.
