Effexor and Remeron combo?

Posted by torachan on December 26, 2007, at 0:28:16

Is it safe to dose on Effexor 75mg/day and Remeron 15mg/day? Don't these two meds both have effects on serotonin that could result in serotonin syndrome?

I take 60mg of Cymbalta, which is similar to Effexor, in addition to 60mg of Remeron and 400mg of Wellbutrin. I was on just the Remeron and Wellbutrin, but I wasn't having much response. When I added the Cymbalta, it was like night and day. Unfortunately, it is making my tremor worse and I'm having anorgasmia. I'm between a rock and a hard place because I don't know if it's better to be happy and sexless or incredibly depressed and horny. =(

Any psych drug can cause serotonin syndrome. Even prozac all by itself or st johns wort all by itself can. When two drugs are combined the risk is increased. Don't actually see it happen hardly ever. I think I was on the edge of it once with a wild cocktail of meds.

Remeron and effexor has not been in the spotlight for a few years but it used to be popular as the treatment resistant combination. It had a name...California Rocketfuel.

I never heard of anyone getting serotonin syndrom from this combo. There was person here about 10 years ago that took a maximum dose of effexor and a medium dose of remeron and probably still is since he doesn't ever come here any more. He was doing very well.
