We really need to be our own advocates when it comes to all areas of our health care. Read the comments after the story, too:

Very true, I have adopted a different attitude in the last few years. I used to totally depend on my doctor for what drug to try next, even though I would mention one or two options, his suggestion always won out over mine since I deferred to his opinion. Now if I'm really struggling, I research and research until I come up with a few good options and present them to him, articles are the best way to document your findings.
This last year I pushed for and got a second opinion, a referral to an expert researcher in depression (thanks to Ugottahavehope who's doc made a recommendation) and I went back on MAO's which had worked for me many years ago but my pdoc had bypassed for multiple trials of newer meds which did nothing for me.
I'm not an expert but it does feel good to be able to bring something new to the table based on your own suggestions of what to try next. Only a secure MD can allow you to do this but it is extremely helpful.
Thanks for the article ClearSkies. Very positive.

I've made many docs mad when refusing to take their meds like vioxx. I said no to that and look what happened. I've said no to boniva too as it's in your body for a month and who knows what that one will show. Here now another they wanted me to take fosamax is bad. No I stick with what's been around a long time. Phillipa

Doctors don't really care about their patients. They only do it for the money.
(i) If doctors didn't earn what they earn, there would be be fewer doctors.
(ii) If doctors didn't have a fancy title to put in front of their names, there would be fewer doctors.
(iii) If being a doctor wasn't a socially prestigious profession, there would be fewer doctors. In fact, many doctors are narcissists.
At the end of the day, being a doctor is all about the money and prestige. They don't really care.
Access to good healthcare should be a basic human right, BUT APPARENTLY ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY FOR IT!!!
Reading about people being denied medical treatment on the basis that their insurance has run out DISGUSTS ME!!!

Please don't overgeneralize or jump to conclusions about others. Posting your opinion of doctors you have dealt with would be fine under Babble civility rules, however, painting *all* doctors with a negative broad brush is considered uncivil.
If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
Follow-ups regarding these issues should be directed to Admin and should of course be civil. Dr. Bob has oversight over deputy decisions, and he may choose a different action.

That poor patient. She really is fishing in the pond I call "the dark ages of modern medicine" - all things neurological.
Frankly, I just don't think medicine is very good (yet) at understanding the brain, what controls consciousness, psychiatry, and the complex interplay between our brain and body.
I think the patient advocates are correct about a lot of things: watch for the IQ drop at the doctor, find a doctor you trust to spearhead your cause, and trust yourself. I mean after all, you've been living with this body your whole life - ultimately you are the expert.
However, they should have advised her to seek the aid of a medical diagnostician. Although they are rare, they usually practice at medical schools and teaching universities. The place where I work has a team of them.
Also, I think a patient should go to the doctor in good faith and with realistic expectations. A patient can absolutely expect the physician to do them no harm. I also think they can expect the physician to aid in their recovery in the best and most appopriate fashion.
But I think realistically physicians are just that - aids in our recovery whether it be from cancer, depression or a broken ankle. In fact, when dealing with a complicated issue, it is very unlikely that a trip to the doctor will "cure" me.
Unfortunately I've learned, there is no magic pill (although I was very very lucky in that prozac is pretty darn close). Physicians like "House" on the Fox network simply don't exist(and even he almost always just about lets the patient die before curing them).
Physicians should be there to help, but they are only human.
Seldom.
